92 civic Alternator random stops - What all can I check before getting a new one?
I have a radar detector hooked up in the off position to monitor voltage.
When it's working, my battery light is off and the system puts out 14.5 volts.
But it randomly stops working. I can tell because my voltage drops to 12.5 and slowly drains to 9.0 until the car dies (about 10-15 minutes of night driving)
The thing is, this only happens for a couple of days at a time before it mysteriously starts working again. If the alternator was bad, I would suspect it would just go out and not flip back and fourth. What else can I check?

- Are there any interior or exterior fuses that would affect the charging system?
- What all conections inside the engine would affect the charging circuit?
- When I've gotten my alternator tested, both working and not, all they've done is told me what I already know: either it's working or not. Is there a better way to test?
- Could it be the regulator working intermittently? How would I test this since it's on the alternator?
