Default 92-95 VX with EX trans?

I'm looking to buy a VX for my long commute every day to work and came across one but the guy says it has an EX trans. How is this going to affect gas mileage on the highway? He says at 70mph in 5th the motor is turning about 4k rpm.

I really want the VX for the mileage but I'm concerned that the EX trans defeats the purpose. Does anyone have a VX/EX frank? If so how is your mileage on the highway? Is it still 50+ like this guy says? How much would it cost me to swap the proper trans back in there?

TIA

You'll be out of leanburn on the highway so it should cut into your mileage quite a bit. That said VX trannys are dirt cheap and sometimes free ('92 - '95 CX also uses the same trans) and they're pretty simple to swap, I mean it's something you can do in your driveway with basic hand tools, although obviously a shop and airtools make the job a lot more pleasant.

Just realized you're in California, CA VX's didn't have leanburn, so the trans wont matter quite as much, but you will still get better mileage with the VX's super high gearing.

do you think 50mpg is possible as the car sits with 80% highway driving? assuming the car is mechanically sound aside from the higher revving trans?

Nope. Can't see it. You'll still be getting good mileage by anyones standards, but more like 40mpg i would say.

So I came across another VX, a lot cleaner this time but again I'm cursed with the EX tranny. On the upside it's from Canada and has the 5 wire O2 sensor so I'm assuming FED version. He's saying he gets 350 miles on about 7.5 gallons as it sits not too conservative (75mph freeway speeds). That sound about right? 46.67mpg?

It's possible. With an Actual VX tranny you should see 55mpg ish, maybe more like 60mpg on the highway.

Nice!! Now I'll just have to figure out how to work around the whole header/straight pipe issue to get that thing smogged. Haha
