I've found a great deal on a 96 hatch at a local body shop that bought it for the body only and now they don't need it and its been sitting for awhile. Problem is that it needs a transmission. I asked and they said it is not driveable, ie the transmission is toast. The local pick and pull yard only has 92-95 5 spd transmissions, I really am only concerned with making the car move under its own power not really performance as this will be my dd. Will I run into any issues putting a 92-95 5spd tranny in a 96-00 car? Thanks in advance.

depends what motor is in the hatch if its a d series u need a d series trans if its a b series u need a b series trans

Nope. They are fully interchangable

All D series tranny's are interchangeable. i would recommend a 96-00 transmission since the 92-95 have weak Shift forks and are more prone to breaking than the 96-00

thanks everyone, i know you will all hate me if I end up getting this car for as much as I am paying for it, granted it has 160k miles on it and needs a transmission, but hey for $250 and a non rusty body you can't beat it. I'll post pics if/when I get it, tomarrow I'll be at the junkyard picking out my transmission. It is a dx w/ the stock D16Y7 motor by the way.

its ok, right now I'm taking care of what happens to a car w/ very minor rear end damage that has been left outside through our great upstate NY winter and rain.... nasty moldy carpet. I've completely gutted the interior of all the plastic and I am painstakingly cleaning each one off and I already ordered the cardboard trunk cover, the mat that covers the back seats that goes over the trunk, and the oem carpet and floor mats. Next will be the transmission. I drove the car to where it is now, from the lot I got it from to a friends house until his car is finished being put back together at my house. As far as shifting was concerned it was fine, shifted fine through all the gears and the clutch felt fine too. There is a constant noise though when the clutch is engaged. I've been searching on here and found that the input shaft bearing is common to go and can destroy the transmission if it completely goes. A friend of mine had this exact problem and it made a noise all the time but he caught it early on and had it fixed. I don't know if this noise is the result of just letting the bearing go for a long time or something more serious. If it helps to diagnose, while driving if im maintaining speed on flat road it makes no noise, but as soon as I accelerate it sounds like someone sanding a piece of wood on a disc sander. At idle while not moving it sounds louder like a bunch of parts tumbling around inside the transmission. But as far as functionality of the transmission, I found nothing wrong with it while driving. I will be pulling the transmission in the coming weeks and will do a complete tear-down and rebuild if required. I just hope that the transmission casings aren't damaged where the bearings sit. I have rebuilt 3 other honda transmissions, my 91 si tranny, a friends 95 ex auto tranny, and my 93 integra tranny but I have never come across a noise like this, it doesn't sound like the usual throw out bearing problem, but I'm not going to rule out a toasted clutch either. I'll find out soon enough, but thanks for looking out Ek9SiRII, this car was a definate steal for $250, I have to get pics on here so I can justify that. It turns out that it is a 99 dx instead of what I thought was a 96.
