Default 92-95 D15B vs 96+ 15B

I bought a new D15B for my 93 Civic. I was apparently shifted 96+ D15B because it has two VTEC solenoids. I use an AEM ECU. Are the two engines identical except for the heads? I'm thinking about just switching the heads and using the new engine. Please advise. Thanks!

yes, they're identical. the three stage vtec is actually pretty cool, we rigged up a vafc w/ a y8 ecu in my friends ek, 1st solenoid was set to 2800 on the vafc, second solenoid engaged where ever the y8 engages. no cels, averaged 37mpg on the highway in 12v mode.

I've also seen people use the nitrous accessory in hondata to trigger the first solenoid
