92-95 Civic transmissions and misc.
- Is there a difference in gear ratio, car speed on vx, cx, dx and lx basic models? is ones transmission gears go longer than another? Reason is i had to swap transmission b.c it broke. it went P20-C5F-S20 to a P20-J8B-S20. My C5f trans was a dx one. I do not know which model this came off of, J8B.
- Next is, what will the result of being if i over tighten the bolts that hold the pressure plate to flywheel? How soon will damage occur?
- If possible, calibrating speed sensor yourself, is it hard? or would it be worth the money to get it calibrated by a shop?
- Oil light is on, have oil in the engine. but the dipstick is telling me i have more oil than its suppose to have. Shouldnt have happen if i had put 4qts of oil when doing oil change. (oil light occured after the transmission swap) I am going to drain oil and pour correct amount and see if it fixes it. but why would this occur?
Please help with what you can. it would deff. help alot.
Thank you

4. Oil light is on.
Check to see whether the connection is seated properly on the sensor.
Check the oil pressure w/ an oil pressure gauge. Remove the oil pressure switch, install the gauge. Turn the vehicle on, at idle it should have 10psi minimum(1.6L SOHC). At 3k RPMs, it should be at 50psi minimum. If within specs, replace the switch and recheck.
If they're not within specs, replace the oil pump.
1. I googled it, http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/gearratiosdseries.htm
I think J8B is a CX trans, however I could be wrong.
Good luck.

1. Yes there is a big difference. First hand experience I had a Z6 tranny had shorter gears:
Top speeds
1st gear 38mph
2nd 70ish mph
Now I have a CX tranny... ugh..
1st 50 mph
2nd 90 mph
I'd recommend cx/dx for gas mileage and ex/si for shorter gears

1. heres a website to show the actual gear ratio differences and final drive ratio differences.
http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/gearratiosdseries.htm
3. why do you think you need to calibrate your speed sensor? what size tire is on it?
4. oil light is part of the engine, you could change your tranny 100 times and the oil pressure light will never change. your oil pressure light if reading too much pressure probably, drain it and put the proper amount of oil in. possibly your oil pressure light wasn't working properly before and than on the install of the tranny possibly the bump or something of the engine when installing the tranny possibly kick your oil pressure sensor back on. possibly it wasn't working before. when you do your oil change just drain all the oil out, put about 3000mL in than start it and run it for 30 seconds. shut it off and wait about 2 minutes, check your oil level and add accordingly. add like 100mL at a time if you want to be cautious. if the light doesn't reset you have another problem but first eliminate the obivious first

3. oh if you have a problem with matching your speed because of tire size, use this tire size calculator. you just put in your actual tire size vs. the size you have on your rims. it will tell you the difference in speed.

Re: 92-95 Civic transmissions and misc.
kelvinterry, The car is all stock. oem stuff. have the oem 13 inch wheels, tire size is the same as whats recommended. I may need to get someone to drive next to me so i can compare speeds b.c. i know on my old trans (C5F) in 2nd gear it redline out at like 58 mph. this near J8B is telling me im going over 70mph and havent even redline yet. but at the same time i dont feel a pull at all. (even though car is slow, i can feel a pull with what it had).
3. with the oil light, it always comes on when you start the car, so i know the light works but i guess maybe the sensor. but the engine is old at all and hadnt ran hard. everything was working fine untill trans broke months back and sat for couple months while taking trans out, new trans install, ect...
we'll see. thanks

yeah the gear ratios change, and so does the final drive ratio also, but the speed sensor reads after those gears on the output shaft so your ok. but have someone with proper size tires on their vehicle drive next to you and compare but you should be fine.

Re: 92-95 Civic transmissions and misc.
does anyone have any of these answers or where i can find them, been searching and reading the helms book, all the post. ect... i cant seem to find my answers.
update on the oil light. my results, after making sure of it. when i drive "hard" (hahah) when i push the pedal to the floor and run the car all out, anything after 4k RPM the light goes out and stays out until im back down in RPM's. I did drain oil and checked the level and that is good.
i do have CEL and that is code #7. TPS. i used a Digital Multimeter, not sure if its the same as what everyone has been using. not good with electrical stuff and using that device. (here is the link, (http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...175&tab=suppor) ) This was in my dad's junk box. I do not understand how to use this thing and wondering if anyone can help get me to understand it. Let me know
Let me know about anything ive posted today.

Re: 92-95 Civic transmissions and misc.
i find out that the red outline is the oil sending unit. took it off the block and it doesnt look like something that sounds like sending unit. (not sure how this part works for the block) i have replaced it with a working one and the oil light is still on. next diagnose would have to be? oil pan?
the green outline, what is that suppose to be?

Re: 92-95 Civic transmissions and misc.
People say take oil pan out and look inside at pick-up tube and the screen. true? worth it? first week of May, drained oil and replace oil filter. also replace oil sending unit with my old one. light still comes on but it is doing alot better. off more. it did stay off at idle when driving down street, red light. ect... Since this happened, think something is wrong (too late to figure out)? still worth taking the pan and tubes off?
LEt me know. THANKS

Re: 92-95 Civic transmissions and misc.
That black box is part of the pcv system, the pcv valve sits on the hose that comes out of it and runs to the intake. If the light stayed on until 4k rpm, the most likely problem is the oil pump is worn and is not pumping enough oil. Also, one of the journals could be clogged inside the block, keeping the sensor from reading. All it does is when oil pressure is above a certain amount, it presses a small plate inside the unit and connects to ground, or releases from ground. when the engine is off, its grounding the wire, turnin on the light. with proper oil pressure it un-grounds the wire, and the light goes off.
First thing to do would be to take out the sending unit and connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the block, and start the engine, if oil pressure is within standard ranges, then the sender is bad, if not, theres a larger problem somewhere.
