92 4 dr BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING!!!!

I have a 92 4 door civic... my brake lights have suddenly stopped , including the 3rd brake light. Taillights work and so do reverse lights. Blinkers work, everything else is fine. Checked all the fuses underneath the dash, theyre fine. Checked the 20a fuse under the hood, that's fine. Replaced the brake switch by brake pedal, didn't fix my problem. All my bulbs are fine too.

My next step I guess is to check for corrosion or loose wiring. But I don't know if there is something I am missing or not. I also haven't had a horn, but that's been like that since I got the car over a year ago, and I replaced the horn and it didn't fix it. So maybe that's a clue, but like I said the brake lights just stopped working this week. Im really hoping there isnt a short somewhere, I dont feel like replacing the whole wiring harness, I know its probably best, but I want some input on what else I can check or do, I see alot of posts about this but not enough input. So please someone help me out!!!!

How did you check the 20A hood fuse for the brake lights? You need to check whether there is battery voltage at both tiny metal tabs located at the top of the fuse.

I meant the 10a fuse by the way... and how can i check the voltage?

The fuse to check is 20A fuse #42 (brakes & horn) under the hood. Use a test light or multimeter to measure voltage to body ground at both test tabs at the top of the fuse.

check the fuse...and if thats fine then replace your brake stop light switch on the brake pedal...its like $20 at autozone

Checked all the fuses under the hood and dash with an ohm meter... its all good. I replaced the brake light switch with one from a junkyard, so tomorrow im gonna get a new one is case they are bad. Is there any way to test the bls with an ohm meter?.

an ohm meter????
why would you use that ha ha
VOLTAGE not resistance...
everything has a level of resistance but might not have voltage

Re: 92 4 dr BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING!!!!

Testing the fuse for voltage will tell you whether it both receives and transmits voltage whereas testing the fuse for resistance only tells you whether the fuse is good.

lol... yea, but tested for voltage, all good. new brake switch in, didn't do jack. im guessing its an open circuit somewhere, im thinking it may have something to do with the cruise control or just maybe a wire is corroded. pulling apart the interior and dash today to go over everything... i will post back with good or bad news... argggg

well that went quicker and smoother than i thought... fixed the problem. there was a clear and blue plug underneath the dash that isn't plugged in to anything, but it was missing a blue piece witch was causing my open circuit. easy enough... thanks everyone for your help... on the bright side i dont have to worry about replacing a brake switch anytime soon
