lucky i guess - if no idling problems, perhaps unusually loud ticking - JUST FOR ***** and Giggles ... check the timing belt to make sure it didnt skip any teeth.

do a valve adjustment, not like it hurts it - careful not to get ticking confused with the injectors - sometimes dirty injectors are loud ticks too.
Def check the timing belt though, if it wasnt pure tight it might of skipped a tooth, but if that was the case he would most likely have problems starting/ideling and pulling out of first. - Dont mishift again ... its happened to me ... top of 3rd into 2nd and i needed new valves. Sounds like your buddy is lucky - topic done

Man xero you just want me to keep comin back CLM is correct, compression test and I suggest a valve adjustment is your best option to see if the motor is in best shape - if its a 2000 GSR you want 200+ compression/psi number obviously - If i was buying I wouldnt buy it with anything below 210/200 - 2k Motor is pretty new ... shouldnt lose to much compression.

hey plug in a vafc or something and check if tach is off - mine was when mishifted - it starts out as under 100 and gradually gets to 300 off at redline.

Make sure engine is warm. Not sure if you can rent the parts, i know you can buy the part for 40 bucks, and to have it done by a mechanic is like 50.
