Let's just call it what it is. 3". First off, replace all of your piping with 2.5". That'll help you quiet down quite a bit, and unless you failed to follow the rules, it won't hurt your power. Once you have that covered, there are MANY muffler options out there. Go to Youtube, start listening, and find one you like. Don't forget to also have a proper catalytic converter and resonator welded in, as well - they work wonders towards lowering your noise profile.

No. Vibrations and rattles are more likely bad (or overly stiff) mounts, poor maintenance, a poorly maintained steering and suspension system, or bad axles. Or the fact that you have a 15+ year old car, and things will start to rattle over time.

Going from 3" to 2.5" and adding a cat will most certainly make less power.

A cat will take all of 2 WHP. 2 cute little insignificant WHP. Going from 3" to 2.5" won't make less power, what it'll do is shift his powerband. Hell, it might even shift it down to a much more useable powerband. 3" on an NA, stock D or B series is overkill.

Eh, I'm off in 15 minutes and I don't feel like digging up dynos... nor battling with you... but 3" is never overkill, anything past the collector is just a restriction, and yes I have seen stock B16s gain power going to a 3" exhaust.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Actually I found a thread where Derek already linked everything for me. The cliff notes are -

Bigger is better, unless you're concerned with noise.

Marginal power difference on a stock application. Massive noise level differences. I also learned something from that link (regarding scavenging only mattering for header design, and not for exhaust), so thank you for that. So you would gain what, 8 WHP from going from 2.5" to 3"? I wouldn't know, since no one in that thread actually talked numbers, just butt dyno. Even after reading that thread and learning something, I still stand by what I said. On a daily driven stock motor swap, 3" is overkill, and completely unnecessary.

What you gain and lose from a proper 2.5" setup:
Gain a quieter ride
Gain not making yourself a target by every jerkoff with a badge
Lose 10 WHP, easily made up for by taking real driving courses and becoming a better driver
Lose the "I'm a loud obnoxious ****" street cred that's all the rage with kids

What you gain and lose from a 3" setup.
Gain 10 WHP
Gain the stares of everyone around you (including cops, thieves, and that drunk redneck in his pickup who now wants to ram you off the road, or that dipshit who wants to "race" you in his clapped out piece of ****)
Lose the ability to have a normal conversation with people in your car
Lose $100 to the court every time you get popped for a noise violation

Well I can't argue with that.

My point was just that the 3" will make more power, not that it's smart. I'm running 2.75" on my 12.5:1 2 liter. Yeah, I'd make more power with a 3", but it's ungodly loud as it is.

recently donated my overly expensive dc axleback to my track car. d/d is now axleback-less, and is annoying the **** out of me with 2.25" piping.
