Default 73-79 or 80-83 civic info i.e. swap?

so i went to the local small engine guy in town to get something fixed. he starts a conversation about my civic he sees parked out side and comments that he used to work only on civics. i say id love to have an "old" civic. he then leads me out back of the shop and i see one of the craziest things ive ever seen. 3 rows of 5 civics ranging from 73-83, 2 doors and a 1stgen accord. many were the cvcc and he said hed trade me the nice one he restored in 94 and never drove for my lexus strait up. lexus=turd. so im looking for any info regarding the first two gen civics as far a modification. manly upgrading motor to say a b-d-zc
