Default 5w-30 or something else? 2000 Civic

Okay what types of oil should I be using for my 2000 Honda Civic? On the cap I noticed it says 5W-30 but the dealership said to use 5W-20 and then he said something about using 10W-30 or something in the winter time? Can someone please clarify this...sorry if this is a dumb Q but hey my inquiring mind would like to know...give me the low down if possible!! THANKS in advance!!

SUP, I HAVE A 94 HATCH ... I USE 10W-30 DURING THE WINTER, AND 20W-50 IN THE SUMMER , BASICALLY IF U HAVE REALLY COLD WEATHER U WANT TO HAVE A THINNER OIL SO UR CAR STARTS EASIER, WHEN HOT U WANT THICKER OIL TO PROTECT MOVING PARTS INTERNAL....10W-30 IS GOOD DURING WINTER AND SUMMER ... IF U PLAN TO RACE USE 20W-50 SINCE IT PROTECT AT HIGH RPM.. AND IF U HAVE MORE THAN 100K MILES USE SYNTHETIC..GOOD LUCK PCE

Please, please, please completely ignore this.

Moving on.

There is nothing special about your car or engine to merit any but base-level 5w30 motor oil (yeah, that's right, even in a B16A Si). If it's above 75,000 miles, DO NOT use synthetic as it wil burn off faster than regular oil due to viscocity and behavioral differences when cold and hot. If you want something special for your aging auto, use any one of the "Maximum Life" engine oils as they have additives that actively reconstitute worn seals throughout the engine.

If you road race, 10w30 should be sufficient, although if you do it often, I would suggest synthetic or at least a semi-synthetic to protect against premature bearing wear and friction as you wring the **** out of your motor.

I work for Valvoline and work directly with oil, by the way, so if you have any other questions, I can make educated suggestions .
