I cant believe you asked that question
car dont like going into cruising gear at high rpm gear no like that dont do it then
its probably fine if it still works

Somewhat legally? Just admit it - you were acting like a stupid, immature kid and street racing. I'm also going to call bullshit on 185 in a Civic, but that's neither here nor there.
5th gear isn't made for that. Period. You're lucky you didn't fry the gear. Stop doing stupid ****.

185 kmph makes more sense. 185 kmph = 114 mph = 8215 RPM 4th in a JDM S80 (ITR), 8087 RPM 4th in a USDM S80 (ITR), or 7550 RPM 4th in a USDM Y80 (SiR).
Doesn't change the fact that it's stupid.

I just picked up a Civic on Monday, and was curious if 5th gear acts as overdrive?
Also, now I'm curious what kind of damage can occur when shifting at high RPM. I rarely ever take my vehicles to redline, but when I shift 4-5 it's usually around 4500-5000 RPM. Am I letting the RPM climb too high?

Not sure if that was directed towards me but...
I'm aware I have 5 gears. Just because it has 5 gears doesn't mean the 5th is geared as an overdrive. I'm not familiar with Honda's at all, that's why I was curious.
Obviously I use all 5 gears when driving.

Re: 5th grinds in vtec??????
I dont understand relating overdrive to a manual trans....typically older automatic cars have the "overdrive" which still is just an extra gear, and its there to drop the rpms on the highway to get better mpgs. All I mean is if your car has enough torque to pull the car around at low speeds and be in the highest gear....why wait till 5000 rpm to get into the highest gear? All that does is make your gas mileage suffer. Theres a reason our cars are called 5 speeds...I dont say I have a 4 speed ctr trans w/ OD.

Re: 5th grinds in vtec??????
^ yes the overdrive system was used on older automatics but it wasn't an extra gear it was another tranny (added option) our 4th and 5th gears are extra gears.
Yes makers referred to 5th gears as an "overdrive" gear for optimum fuel economy at 60mph when 5 speeds started being marketed. THATS why they call them 5 speeds..
Why wait until 5k? Because Hondas don't have torque they like to rev. Besides your still 2-3k from redline. If you don't then whats the point of having vtec??
In only go into 5th after I've reached my cruising speed that is above 40 any less and mpg will suffer unless I'm going downhill. Thats why your owners manual has different shift points for cruising and accelerating. You don't climb a hill in 5th do you? I do at 5k

overdrive is when you have a gear ratio under 1:1. manual or automatic, it doesn't matter. the output shaft is "overdriven" compared to the input shaft.

Re: 5th grinds in vtec??????
I had another question while driving home last night.
If you shift into a higher gear too early is it actually detrimental to your gas mileage? Say driving around at 35 in 5th gear (I don't actually do this, just an example) Or is is it just harder to get up to speed because of lack of torque?

I know it depends on the engine and weight of the car as well, from my experience I rarely have to downshift for any hills around here and I live in the northwest (hills are plentiful).

Re: 5th grinds in vtec??????
I've already stated this and will again...I cruise around town in 5th gear @ 35-40mph. If the car has enough torque to pull the car around, why not be in the highest gear to get the best mpg's....If the car is obviously bogging, then yes, downshift a gear. When the engine is bogging down, that is effecting your gas mileage in a negative way.

I know I'm new here, but you come across as a real know-it-all dick in every post I've seen from you so far. You don't answer the question and you try to make the person you are speaking to feel stupid for asking. And so far the answers you have given me haven't even been correct.

Re: 5th grinds in vtec??????
^^ That is true. And ya if you're just cruising at a steady speed at about 4k in 3rd or so throw it in 4th or 5th as the lower the rpm's the less fuel burned. And as previously stated if it starts to bog down and you have to apply the accelerator more (gas pedal) gear down because bogging it will cause you to lose fuel mileage aswell. There's no harm in driving around low rpm's but every so often it never hurts to open her on up .
Hope that helps.

Re: 5th grinds in vtec??????
^seriously^
Well before I had a Honda I would shift at 2.5k now I shift at about 3.5k to get any useful amount of torque. More depending on the situation. If it had any torque I could start in second. I use 1st a lot. Of course If you don't want to accelerate or keep your speed and momentum up then shift into 5th. I usually only go into 5th if I want to maintain the speed I am going (cruise gear) Also I get an average of 38mpg anywhere between 5000 and 9000 ft. up and down the Rocky Mts
If you don't have the enough torque don't shift up you will step on the gas and go nowhere (like this thread) and waste gas because your engine would not burn all the gas in 5th gear you would be getting worse gas mileage than if you were in say 3rd (if you don't have enough torqu) because your engine has to work harder to spin in 5th. Burn less gas but that's because your engine wouldn't be using the gas optimally, and would be wasted Not burned. Less rpms do not necessarily mean better mpg.
This is how I drive(flat road) 1st to 20 2nd to 50 then 4th. (downhill) 1st to 15 2nd to 40 3rd to 60 then 5th. (uphill) 1st to 30 2nd to 60 3rd to 90 4th to top.
5th gear under 3k Im down hill 3+k I'm cruising flat.
