5 speed crawls through all gears
Hey all,
Some Background: I have a 1999 honda civic dx hatchback
The engine is d16y7 (non vtec) and 1.6L obd II the transmission is an s40
I just rebuild the engine and transmission.
Engine:
starts good, runs good. Idles normally. In neutral the power is great. You can accelerate all the way to 5k if you wanted to.
Transmission:
Shifts completely fine through all gears but bog down (loss of power)
Reverse has no issues, when I shift into reverse it's normal and the rpms are fine and go as high as you want just like neutral but, when you select 1-5th gear it doesn't have any power
the petal needs to be pressed down just to get up to like 500 rpm
When you shift into first the rpm's drop really low and I have to push the accelerator all the way to the floor for it to get up in speed.
I have to push the accelerator all the way to the floor for it to go anywhere and when I push the petal all the way down it still crawls, but eventually it get's to about 2k rpm then I can shift into 2nd and then awhile later 3rd gear.
I haven't tested it past 3rd because It's just too slow i'm not going to take it on the interstate or anything until the gears are normal again
I think it could be a sensor or something.
it feels like the accelerator cable is binding or something but when I push it all the way down the throttle opens up just fine
I don't really have a clue my haynes manual says it could be a loss of power from the engine and there's a billion reasons for loss of power.

Post the CEL codes.

Check the both the mechanical and ignition timing.

Re: 5 speed crawls through all gears
I made a video of the problem
I’m about to check:
timing
spark
and fuel
back to basics
I’ll post my results here in an hour or so

Re: 5 speed crawls through all gears
no they're all the same
I just checked the timing it looks like it might be a tooth off.
I'm not expert by any means but if it was a tooth or two teeth off would it not give me enough power under load (in gear) to accelerate properly?
I'm thinking this might be a combination of a couple of things.
what i'm having a really hard time understanding is why it idles so well, yet -if- the timing is off too much why doesn't it idle horribly? Not just in gear.
I ran out of day light so I couldn't test it out just yet.
I'll be able to try again in a couple of days

Properly set the mechanical timing and then go from there.

The car will idle really well even though the mechanical timing is off a tooth (maybe two) one way or the other... especially if it is retarded. Fix your mechanical timing and let us know how it runs.

Re: 5 speed crawls through all gears
Hey guys!
I reset the timing and just wanted to give an update that it runs great!
it was the timing being one or two teeth off causing the no power in gear
thank you everyone for helping me
I’m so thankful and happy
😁 cheers!

Re: 5 speed crawls through all gears
Thanks for updating the thread. I had the same thing happen to me a long time ago replacing a water pump on an engine with cheapo cam gears.
