3rd gear grinding while driving? Not grinding when shift
When I drove on my auto- manual converted 00 EX, 3rd gear has a pebble grinding noise while driving, what could this be? I know the typical gear grinding people have is when shifting, which is the synchros. I shift into 3rd fine, but when I drive on it, it sounds like there's pebbles being grinded in there. 1,2,4,5 are all fine it's just 3rd gear. Not sure if this is related, but when I glided in 3rd gear on an offramp, it was giving some small jerks. it's a d16y8 transmission off a 98EX.

something maybe hitting something else? my guess would be to take it apart and check for gear problems

If it gets to that, I think I'll just get a new transmission I know it's a good way to find out, but can any1 give me a good guess at what it is without me taking apart my transmission?
My friend was saying possibly my mainshaft bearing, any other ideas? Maybe someone with a similar problem before can chime in

if it was either the mainshaft bearing, or the throwout bearing you would hear it in all gears not just third. its probably the gear itself thats messed up

If you felt extreme pain from a tooth on the right side of your mouth, but couldn't make it to the dentist for a while.. Wouldnt you chew on the left side? My advice, use 3rd as little as possible until you get the new transmission.

Interestingly, the next time I drove it after that night, the grinding vanished. Not sure what to think of it, but it drives fine now minus me being a noob stick driver
