Default 200hp, 10,000+ rpm B-series. Am I insane?

I just got a raise, and I've decided that I want to drop a B-series into my car.

I can't decide on a motor though... and I was hoping you guys could help.

I want to build a motor that will make 200-225 horsepower, and rev to 10,000 RPM "reliably". And I'd rather do it without a turbo. My first thought was a B16A2, but after looking around for a while, I'm not so sure any more.

Any ideas? Any input would be appreciated.

have 10k rpm is pointless unless your motor build even makes power that high.

I'm not an expert by any means, but obviously high compression, head work, and cams, along with a hell of a lot of balancing of the rotating assembly will be necessary. I don't know if it can be done reliably though, that's pretty high RPMs there lol.

10k can be done, but 99% of all builds don't make any more power past 9,200-9,400. 200whp out of a b-series is pretty easily obtainable with a good budget/parts setup. Personally with a B series I would shoot for a 9k redline, making 225whp reliably. Now, if you are wanting more power then that I would consider doing a K series, stock K24's with some bolts ons, cams and a good tune are making power in the 240-250whp range.

get yourself a b18c and swap it in.
have fun with it.
In the meantime research and plan your build and youll already have a healthy start with the b18c

Leave 10k rpm to Ichishima-san and the guys at Spoon.

What's the fascination with 10k? Are we pulling big numbers out of the air for no reason?

I think because it's that 5 digit redline. If you had an insane motor the warranted 10k redline and made power to 10k then awesome. 1% of people being able to do that means everyone else thinks it's possible for the average consumer. 9k is all anyone would ever need.

even 9k isnt needed. majority of cookie cutter setups people are doing will have power fall off well before then.

I would agree, personally I wish my R motor had a few hundred more rpms. I bet it would still make power to 8,700-8,800

The only thing that isn't "meh" about the B16B is the factory LSD, and the fact that it uses a B18C5 block. For the price tag, you're better off just getting a B18C5 and dropping it in.

Its easier to make the 200 with a 1.8. Forget 10K, its not worth all the $ at the machine shop(it takes spoon a block girdle+precision balance, etc to do this.) Like everyone here is saying 9 is far enough. You'd be surprised how far 9 is. What's the highest you've revved to now(not in neutral) and with what engine, just out of curiousity?

8,800rpm and 185hp. The B16b could use another 400-500rpm though.

$1300 difference between the two, you could easily make up 15hp or more with $1300 on the B16B.

I'll make 200whp on a 1.6L

I'd like to see a Honda, mind you streetable, rev to 11+k. No racecar, something that is mild but wild when the pedal is down.

I see your rants about these motors from time to time. Im aware you are all about displacement and I get the vibe off you that unless its 1.8 liter or more....its junk.
The b16b has a lot more pro's than just having lsd and the p72 block. There are more reasons to justify the price (which I can agree is a little high) but is a stout motor nonetheless. Not every single person has the desire and competition mind set to be the fastest. Would it be nice to have more torque:yes....is it a necessity:no There is a reason they designed the motor the way they did. Mind you, I didn't go on a shopping spree at hmo (if I did I would have gotten the b18c). But when comparing it to an alike motor....it trumps it.

The debate is probably moot. I doubt the OP is going to actually build anything seeing as how he's so eagerly participating in the discussion.

There is some B16 here in europe running around 205 with under 10,000 rpm. All rally cars with dedicated teams and engineering

Somehow I don't think OP has the funds for what all is needed to achieve his "goal" or he wouldn't be asking us

People tried to tell me that I would hate the torque loss going with the B16B and honestly I can't even notice it.

I've been checking this thread daily since I posted. I'm just reserved about participating in the discussion because I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I want to build, and I don't want to confuse people. I just want to build a well-rounded car that is both tame enough to daily drive, and fast enough to have fun with.

I've given up on the 10,000 RPM goal because apparently, 10,000 RPM motors tend to go through rings like fat people go through cake. So that leaves me with 200hp. Now, I suppose I could consider an H22, but the motor/transmission combo weighs something like 40 lbs more than a b-series (55lbs more than my d15y8), and because all of that weight is right above the front axles it would compromise handling.

I hear everyone talking about the B18C5 and the B18B, but as far as I can tell, I could just build a B16A2 for less money.

So I suppose I should rephrase my question: What b-sereis motor should I buy, that will give me 200hp most reliably, turbo or otherwise?
