I have a 2000 Honda civic hx 5 speed the ball joint And axle went out on the highway. I replaced both and the wheels now move side to side but the car will not move. Any help or comments would be fantastic

Check the inner CV axles to make sure they have not popped out.

Are you saying the engine spins the wheels while on jack stands but not when car is on the ground?

It sounds like what ^ said. i had that problem and only one halfshaft was popped in. it easy for one to pop out when putting the other one in. i cant remember what side it was when one was put in it kept popping the other out until i did it the opposite way.

The wheels move side to side but do not spin. I have a lot of money in the ball joints axle and tie rod ends and no one seems to know why its not moving as I said it feels like its not going into gear

OP: when you intsalled the CV axles did you hear them "click" in when seated properly?
Did you knock the inner splines in using the outer axle as shown in this video starting at 5:45 time mark?

What does the mechanic think it is or does he know the situation yet? Sure sounds like a transmission issue and most likely the clutch. Have you tried to drive it starting in other gears besides first? Tried it in reverse gear?

Did the same mechanic do the prior clutch replacement you mentioned and how many miles ago was it replaced?

Does the speedometer go up when you put it in gear and try to move? If it does, that means the clutch is working but you have an axle problem.

"Axle broke off inside the transmission" would be a very unusual sort of failure. Usually either a CV joint comes apart or the axle breaks in the middle.

It seems like a transmission issue to me. How did it go? Hopefully you'd let us know what the issue is and how it was fixed. Good luck!
