2000 Honda Civic Ex 5spd - Car Cranks and Fires up Sometime but not all the time?
HI Everyone,
I've done a number of tuneups on the Civic but what's been puzzling me is that sometimes the car will fire up then shut down. Typically during cold starts. However, once the car is going, she rides like a dream. No issues with laying the peddle down and going. I also do smell gas so I'm not too sure at this point.
Some recent updates to the car:
1.) Plugs, Wires
2.) Oil Change, PCV
3.) Cleaned IACV
4.) Replaced Main Relay
Past Issues:
1.) P0420 - Was cleared, came back a few times, cleared again and hasn't been back since.
2.) P0113 - Cleared the issue was a loose wired not plugged in the way into intake
In addition, I pulled the Cap off on the distributor hoping to replace Cap and Rotor. However, there is no screw on the rotor to remove????? I'd like to check the ICM just in case.
Any other suggestions would be helpful, thanks!

In order to get the screw to show up on the rotor, crank the engine. You can either do it by hand or luck of the draw and just turn your key and hope it shows up haha. It eventually will.
And your starting problem seems like it may be fuel related. I'm not too educated on fuel related issues. But I would do some further investigation into the fuel system.

So I called a buddy who specializes in Honda's and regarding the screw missing on the rotor, he said it's one of those cheap ones that slide right off. The previous owner must not have known but in any case. He recommended to replace the whole distributor. In his experience with this particular model, there's only two things that could go wrong 1.) Distributor 2.) Main Relay (Which i've replaced already)
Last night on my way home from work, I literally had to pop the clutch in gear while on the freeway as it kept on dying so in this case it went from randomly happening to kapoot! Made it home....barely : P

Finally changed the distributor last week and have driven over 1000 miles since then. I ended up ordering a Beck/Arnely dizy and through my research found out that O'Reily sold the same model but on ebay 2x less the costs and worked perfectly fine : ) Thanks guys/gals for the feedback! BTW, i'm also getting better gas mileage!

Sorry to revive an old thread but I was having similar problems with my Civic and came across this thread while searching for info.
I'm pretty sure the main relay is working properly (I hear the 3 "clicks" when starting.)
It's getting gas to the cylinders. (Pulled the plugs and gas can be seen and smelt.)
After more searching and troubleshooting it appears the distributor is the problem.
I've already change the cap and rotor, it still turns over but wont start.
So now I'm thinking it's time to put in a new distributor.
It's a 2000 Civic EX, Manual transmission 5 speed.
The 6th digit on the VIN is an "8"
I've see some Distributors FS on ebay and CL with a part# of TD-73U
Anybody know the correct part or model number for the Distributor?
Also anybody know if any of the aftermarket distributors are any good?
Thanks
