Flywheel is possibly cracked or loose

It could also be a throwout bearing problem, but that is generally a whining type noise.

but would a heat sheaild only raddle with the clutch out, and go away when pressed in??

Also- can i check the flywheel thru the inspection cover, and not have to pull the tranny

Not a thorough inspection to find cracks. You can tell if it's loose though. I highly doubt it's loose if it's never been apart from the block.

Too bad you're that far away, I would've checked it out for you at my shop. It may be a few hours for the drive, but you will atleast get a true and honest answer.

Well my guess would be the heat sheilds due to the exhaust moving when the engine is actually "running" per say. But when you have the clutch in its not causing your exhaust to rattle due to the very low airflow through your pipes.. Id say before going and paying just take a quick look at the sheilds see if they are loose if so tighten them.. Than see if the rattling persists if it does have someone take a look at it for ya

not throwout bearing, it would make noise with clutch in, however sounds like my current problem in my 99 si... mainshaft bearings etc...

Input Shaft Bearing is usually the culprit. Tranny noise is usually 3 things with Hondas - Throwout Bearing, Input Shaft Bearing, or F'ed Up Tranny. LoL

I always confuse input shaft and throwout. I think it's throwout when the clutch is not engaged... but i may be wrong.

Anyways, local shops around her wanted $600+ to fix it. Yes you can drive on it, but you can also pick up a decent ex tranny for $300 and replace it with a helms. Presto, transmission fixed and betterer.
