2000 civic si, block shot, should I repalace with b16a2 or b18c or b20 vtec
Hey guys, im brand new first post. Im a toyota mechanic and have some experience with hondas. My dad bought a 2000 civic si brand new, it has around 200k it developed some head problems a few mos. back( valve was stuck open, etc.) after a head rebuild with no inspection of the bottom end by an aweful mechanic, it had a ring seize and left a pretty nasty mark in cyl. and is now burning 2 plus quarts per change. Long and short its my car now. I was planning on a new USDM b16a2 block or full bottom, but after thinking about a b18c or b20 vtec, Im curious with my setup(every thing that comes with the si) how much work would one of these swaps be? Im not interested in any boost setup as i would just go with the stock block change and stock head. I am interested in a n/a setup for b18c or b20. What parts would I need, what are the major changes or hassles with this. my goal is a reliable dd with some n/a zip. Im fine with just a stock setup with full bolt on, but since im in this situation if its no big deal and looks cheaper at this point, why not?

I might be a bit biased, but a gsr swap would be your best bet at reliability, ease, and power. All you need is the longblock, just swap everything over from the b16. like mounts etc..

excuse my ignorance but a gsr would be a b18 acura swap? correct? If I am correct a b18c1 would be a gsr, would there be any linkage issues for shifter? would all ignition and computer connections etc. be plug and play? Would stock computer setting be fine? would power band still pull to around 9k? what hp and tq would i be looking at with that block and the b16 head? this will also drop the compression some, correct?

yes sir. gsr=b18c1 (if it's a jdm engine then it's stamped b18c). b18c5=type-r swap (jdm is also stamped b18c)

I have tracked down a usdm b16a2 full bottom for around 1k with 47k orig. no rebuild. If anybody knows of a good full bottom b18c1 hit me, for I am now looking. hehehe. yall might make a honda man outta me yet. Any wisdom or knowledge please rain it down, like I said im used to tacomas, landcruisers, supras, soarers, etc. keep it coming thanks guys, and opinions are graciously being taken.

i have heard that where the dowels fit together will need to be drilled and there are some slight mods to run the b18c etc., then ive also heard direct easy drop in, anybody done this? Anyone with b20 experience? Any HP #'s with ba18c block and b16 head stock?

not to sound mean, but it is night and day difference between a gsr engine and a b16 engine. I consider the B16 garbage,, haha,, I know my user name tells otherwise, but I have a B18 in mines now...

Get a complete gsr longblock and ecu and swap it in. You will have all the parts you need from the b16 to put it in. You will need to remove the immobilizer from the gsr ecu unless you run a obd1 ecu with a jumper harness.
Edit: you will need to do minor wiring I believe for the vtec on the gsr. Not 100% sure though
Oh and gsr's go to 8K NOT 9 as you said above

to keep on track, this is a car with a crapped block(worthless except was owned by my father who is in his 60's since new(easily used with great parts) and will be a cheap dd), i need to replace block to use as a dd. this is not a race car or anything else. since i have to replace the block if a b18c makes power sense and is an easy switch, great. if not ill go with a new stock block.

Go b18c1, you will be glad you did, it's night and day compared to the torque-less b16. Do more research also. Here's a helpful guide.

I'd personally go lsvtec if you're not gonna go with the original b16.
I had one for years and it walked gsr motors all day long and I didnt have any issues until I misshifted one night..
Also, I have a b16a2 block I can sell ya for like 700 shipped

This is nothing but an opinion poll. No tech here. Look up the specs of each engine, weigh the pros and cons and make your decision. It's called research. Al your questions could have been answered with a few searches.
