So about a month back I had this same problem when I'd start the car early in the morning or at night the idle would either go high like you were on the gas or would go up/down like it wasn't getting enough fuel so couldn't maintain a steady idle.

My dad and I looked at during the day but everything was fine so next day same thing only the CEL was on. We eventually disconnected the battery to reset the ECU and the CEL turned off. Made sure the gas cap was on properly and didn't have the problem again until now. Talked to a mechanic who said it the gas cap was loose it could mess with the fuel pump pressure idk never heard of that myself.

Anyhow today it happened again on the way home from work it was dark out so I had to use my cell-phone to look under the hood but seem to me the throttle cable is off...I has the engine off but if you pulled back the pulley like you would to rev the engine the wire would just go limp so I'm thinking its caught somewhere. I checked the rubber to see if it was getting pulled into it but its not that is there some other place it could be getting snagged up?

Also if its not that has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions on what to check next. Its morning here in a few so have all day to figure this out hopefully just wanna know if theres anything I should check first like simple things.. air filter is clean just checked that I'm thinking its something to do with the fuel flow.... its a ex btw stock engine d16y8 i believe

hey hows it going well i read ur prob ur having with the car idling i had the samething ive never hear of the gas cap thing but when i had that prob it was one of 3 thing the iac valve, head gasket, or the little air adjuster on ur throttle body when u drive at high rpm's that little flat head screw on the throttle body will loosen up try and find out if any of those three things are it hope it helps

YUP it could be the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE... or you might want to try adjusting the throttle cable itself... mines was sort of doing the same thing even after putting in a brand new IACV from Honda... Everytime you press the gas and let go it goes up and down up and down and eventually 6 times later it settles down... adjusted the cable and it went away... good luck!
