Default 2000 Civic EX - replacing oil rings.

My friend has a 2000 EX (Si in Canada). He's burning alot of oil right now... what could be the possible causes? And... the cost involved (he's not a DIY guy)... so he's willing to take it to a dealership to maintain warranty.. bla bla bla.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit... I didn't type the subject line! lol -- that was my buddy!

REMOVED what I said about the wrong forum since this is a pretty general topic. Anyhow, burning oil can be a lot of things. How much is he burning for starters? A quart a week? A quart per 100 miles? Typically the issue is either a) valve seals or b) piston rings. Either are fairly expensive, but COULD be done over a weekend w/ some help. Rings involves pulling the pistons rods and head. Valve seals will involve just pulling the head. An easy way to diagnose the problem is a compression test and a leakdown test. Post the results of that and we can discuss further what problems there may be.

Thanks -- I certainly will. He has a compression test booked for Friday at Honda. So we'll go from there!

Leakdown test will give you more specific information than just a compression test.

Honda will likely not do an leakdown test. Theyll tell you its normal for the car to burn a quart every 1k, possibly run an oil test with additives added to the oil. theyll make him go back there every 500 miles or so a few times to check on the status or anything to give a run around. Then theyll just say the cars fine without any type of work done.

A leakdown test requires an air compressor and a fairly expensive tool. Best to get done at a mechanic if you do not have the equipment immediately available to you. Here's a nice link explaining some things:
