Default 2000 Civic EX - Code 76?

I just picked up a 2000 EX. Was taking the "white indiglo" gauge overlay off yesterday and found that the CEL bulb had been broken. Swapped in the seat belt bulb and, of course, CEL is on.

It's throwing a code 76, but I can't find that code anywhere. 7 long blinks immediately followed by 6 short blinks, definite NOT a code 7 and a code 6. Anyone have any input???

The car is not registered, so I can't take it to Autozone to have the code pulled by a scan tool.

Are you sure it's 76? And not 86? I've never heard of a 76, I know 71-74 are random misfire of the cylinders. and 86 is ECT sensor.

76: Cylinder 6 Misfire or a Random Misfire
a condition is present that is creating a cylinder misfire
* valid code for V-6 engine only

Dont know why you would be throwing that...

Yah, even a google search yielded only (1) thread on d-series.org that received no responses other than "take it to Autozone".

I'm going to get temp plates for the car on Friday and take it to Autozone for a code scan. I'll update the thread for the archives when I get back.

Autozone pulled a P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold. Wouldn't that be a Honda code 67?

Guess I'm replacing the cat. If I go with a Carsound, will it continue to throw that code? This is my first OBD2 car, so I'm not sure how it's going to respond.

After new plugs, wire, cap and rotor and an ECU reset, the light is off and stayed off while the car came up to operating temp.

Rotor and cap terminals were burned and plugs were heavily carboned. I'm hoping it may have been a very weak spark that couldn't fully burn the mixture and the 02 sensor mistook it for a cat failure. I guess I'll see tomorrow when I put some miles on it and see if it stays off.

Well, car was great all week and passed emissions yesterday. Today, the CEL came back on after ~300 miles of no problems, and again, code 76. I reset the ECU, light went off and has been off for about 25 miles.

If there was a problem with this new cat, wouldn't the emission test yesterday have revealed that?

There has to be a problem with the emissions samples that are being taken by the 02 sensors, not the emissions themselves. The secondary 02 was replaced with the cat, so maybe the primary 02 is failing? Wouldn't that be a different code?

Light back on again. Code 76 again.

I went looking for other possible reasons for the light. Checked the ignition timing and found that the mechanical timing was so far off, I couldn't even see the timing marks on the crank pulley. So, I pulled the timing belt, corrected the mechanical timing, reinstalled the timing belt, set the ignition timing, car runs great, but the light comes back on during my test drive.

I have also changed out the PCV valve thinking that crazy crank case pressures might alter emissions, but the original PCV was functioning properly.

Plugs all looked good as well despite the timing.

Basically, I've exhausted every idea I've had. Does anyone have any other ideas or opinions? Should I try another ECU? Change that primary 02 sensor?

Goodness. Jumper harness and P28. Save your P2P for when you have to go back to emissions.

Well, now that I've put a couple hundred miles on this car, I find it is using oil at a HEROIC rate. Seems like code 76 is legit for a failing cat and I've just detroyed the new one.

Thanks to everyone for their help on this one.
