I have a 2000 civic HX with 260K miles on it. It is used almost exclusively on the highway. I replaced the first EGR valve at about 130K and now I've got the code again at 260K. I have the usual rough idle and poor gas mileage that I had the first time. I cleaned the ports and took the valve off and cleaned it, checked the diapgram, still not any better.My qusetion is, do I really need the egr valve? The hose is so small I wonder just how much exhaust it could really be recirculating. What is the downside to installing a cover plate? Do they work to eliminate the idle and MPG problems? Will the code clear if I install one?
Just recently I have had the fuel gauge problem where it sometimes works and when it warms up it goes to full. I'm going to check for a short today or tomorrow. I called the dealer and was told that the sending unit and the fuel pump are one unit and the price is 275$. Is there a cheaper way around this? I don't want to buy a fuel pump when I don't need one.

should be someone out there who's replaced their stock hx pump with an aftermarket one. probubly wont want too much for their stock one. how much are the egr valves? if your getting 130k out of them, i'd just replace it.

Dealer price for the EGR was 260$ and another 275$ for the fuel pump. Kind of tough right before xmas.
