1998 honda civic Ex. fuel injector pulse issue.
 

Hello fellas. new here to the honda scene. My name is donald. I originally come from the Volkswagen scene. but when i rode in my first B16 turbo. i realized i was going about cars and power the wrong way with Vw's

anyways. i have a small problem. not new to cars by any means. very familiar with cars. just not hondas at all.

i bought a 1998 Honda civic Ex d16y8 with a 5 speed. bought the car for 725$ completely rust free. super clean interior. and a decent body. drove it home 1.5 hours running literally on 3 cylinders.

at first i thought the distributor was bad. cause i've heard those are a problem with these. so i get it home. and i'm looking at it. and i decided before i shock myself. i'd mess with the fuel injector to see if one was clogged. i started at 4. i unplugged it. and it instantly made the car run awful. unplugged 3. NO change. drove it around the block with it unplugged ran the exact same, like i drove it home. then unplugged 1 & 2 and they both changed the way the car ran...

so then i started to see if the car was sparking on all 4 cylinders. unplugged 4. changed how it ran instantly. unplugged 3. nothing. pulled it out to see if there was any ark of spark. nothing.... then the car died. and wouldnt start up. so i'm like well i broke something.... so then i started messing with the parts out of the dizzy i replaced with my aunts honda. i took the coil out of it. and put it in mine. car fired right up. but still ran like poop. oh..... keep in mind the CEL is blinking constantly.did when i bought it.

then i took the fuel rail out. cleaned the injectors. put number three injector in place of 1. just to be sure #3 injector wasn't bad. and to also see if #3 injector plug was working with a known good injector. put it all back together. same thing. #3 injector still not pulsing. so i get my volt meter out. and #3 plug is literally is only getting. .2-.5 volts. i check all the rest and they are getting 1.2-1.5 volts. i'm not even sure if thats what they are supposed to have.

so i've narrowed it down to have no pulse to inject #3.

my next question is. do these cars have a bit of a harness issue.
can this be caused by a ground. or is this simply a damn ECU fault?

hopefully this in enough information for some help.

my plan with this car is to boost the d16. till it decides to blow up. i'm trading my racing gokart for a b16a with a pr3-4 head. and 5speed trans. i plan to put that on my engine stand. and build that for 9.5:1 pistons. with H-beam rods. ARP studs all around. some decent head work. and a turbo set up. running 15lbs of boost. i'd also like some insight on ecu programs chips or anything for boosting these. cause i know it's not like a volkswagen. chip it and go. i've read they are a tad more complicated. but i haven't confirmed that. any info on boosting one of these is also very much appreciated.

So plug 3 has no spark and the injector 3 does not pulse fuel, correct? Other cylinders have both spark and fuel, correct?

my apologies sir. i forgot to mention. i checked #3 for spark again, after replacing the coil. and i did confirm that it has spark, nice blue ark.... just no injector pulse....

Spark should be bright white.

The injector connectors should receive battery voltage. All of your voltages are too low.

really? so i should be seeing 12+ volts. now should i see about getting a new ECU? and bright white? i will double check tomorrow.

Voltage to the injectors does not come from the ECU. It comes from the main relay via fuse 44.

Given that you said that all but the #3 injector works, then I presume that your voltage measurements were done incorrectly.

Again, spark should be bright white.

then what is telling the injector to pulse. how does that work? that's my question?

The ECU controls injector pulses by providing ground for the voltage.

oh ok. gotcha. thank. i will go out there tomorrow. and test voltage a different way maybe my ground wasn't good enough. thank for the info. i'll come back tomorrow with more info!

found the culprit :) burnt up exhaust valve.

compression tested it today. all cylinders made 210 PSI. then #3 made 0PSI... so i started tearing it apart.

in the process of finding a y8 head. once that is found. i'll send it to my buddy to get rebuilt. and decked. for fresh surface.
