Default 1998 Honda Civic DX Sedan exhaust help!

I need to ask that all you EK owners help me out here.

My questions to you guys is...what would I need to purchase to have a normal exhaust system? I see a lot of cheap aftermarket ones offering everything, but it seems I would need longer headers due to me deleting the cat off the manifold! Also, the kit comes with a test pipe? I want to replace the test pipe with a high flow cat...I DO NOT want it to sound all ricey. I have a 6 month old and I do not want to blow his ear drums!

So, if you guys can give me a list of what I would need to pull from a junk yard or any kind of direction/input...it would all be greatly appreciated. Even if you guys now of any full kits that I could buy, just let me know. I am on a very tight budget, so I can not spend a ton of money on this!

Can we have some more information on the car? Is it a hatch? A 4 door? Also why can you not run a stock exhaust?

What kit are you talking about?

If I understand correctly it sounds like you should buy a cat and then go to a muffler shop and have them weld it in.

Like it says in the title...it is a 98 Civic DX Sedan (4dr). The Cat is mounted to the bottom of the Exhaust Manifold, and it is leaking. The research I have done, this is apparently a common problem. I have had nothing but 90-95 Civic's, and I have never heard of Honda putting the Cat's on the Manifold. I am wanting to run a system in this order...headers, downpipe, cat, resignator pipe, and axleback.

The way it is set up on my car now is...headers, cat, front pipe, reignator pipe, axleback. I am reading something about the 96-00 EX has the Cat under the car and not on the Manifold. Is there anything I can do to run the EX setup on a DX?

Sorry I missed the information in the thread title. I have a 96 CX hatch, the stock header had the cat in it. After my swap I had an aftermarket header without a cat so in order to pass inspection in Virginia I needed a cat. I welded a magnaflow high flow cat in right after the header. You could try this with an aftermarket header and cat. Or just look for a header with the cat in it at the junkyard.

I am in Georgia, so I dont have to worry about inspections. I used to live in Virginia Beach, and it is crazy what people get away with here. I am going to LKQ on Tuesday to try and find a center armrest in tan for my interior. Also, now that I know this I was going to try to find some EX headers for it. Could I use an EX header and downpipe on the DX and just run a high flow cat to EX resignator pipe to an aftermarket axleback?

No clue, maybe someone else can chime in. Chances are though you will need some custom welding I am guessing.

Ok, well...hopefully someone does. I really want to get this done, I hear that this happens on these cars a lot...like every 50k miles. I have never had any problems with manifolds until I bought this car Friday. They replaced the manifold gasket before I bought the car, but it is apparenty the Manifold itself that is cracked.

just run the stock ex exhaust manifold which is two piece i believe the top portion which bolts to the down pipe..use the stock cat off an ex or a high flow one which ever you prefer either use ur stock b pipe off ur sedan along with the stock muffler or ur gonna need to decide which size of piping nd muffler ur gonna wana use..judgen by wat you said nd not wanten it to be loud nd ricey ur better off usen ur stock b pipe nd muffler

Thanks "ej8hybrid", I am going to go to the you pull it yard on Tuesday. I will see what I can find, I just looked and they set a 98 Civic today. Although it does specify a trim or color, it would be nice to find a dark Green 98 4dr EX 5spd.

High flow, test pipe or ripping out cat screens you won't have much or no difference in HP gains compared to a stock cat. Why choke your kid with increased emissions when idled?

If it's in your budget you could go headers with cat back exhaust, which will not crack as quickly as the cat directly to manifold design your model had stock. Maybe ( but you'll need to get verification) an EX's manifold (which is cat back) will be a direct bolt-on and you can pull one from a salvage yard. In that way you could get both manifold and cat cheaply.

Why not go to a muffler shop and get a stock exhaust put back on and if you want a racey sound get a little louder muffler.
This going to a junk yard and doing a pieced together job will end up costing you more in the long run.
Ask yourself........ What price do you put on your 6 month olds hearing?

The labor cost alone at a shop could be as much or more than finding a used one and installing it DIY. I am not saying your suggestion isn't a good one, it is, just more expensive. Also, why have a racey sound on slow as a constipated turd car?
