1998 civic ex/d16y7 block/d16y8 head engine bogs and sputters (solved)
So I just bought a car a couple days ago and am having some issues with it. For one I'm getting terrible gas mileage, a full tank lasted me about 100 miles. The second thing, it is a Y7 block with a y8 head and vtec does not work. The third thing is when I'm driving it usually around 4k while I'm accelerating it just wants to cut out and bog down and it kinda pops and sputters and smells very rich. Then I have to let off the gas and push it slowly to make it keep accelerating. Also power seems alot lower than it should be. I know almost nothing about hondas and was wondering if anyone has had anything like this happen to them and could enlighten me on what to do to fix it. My plan was to start with getting rid of the cat (could be clogged), new o2 sensor, maybe injector cleaner stuff and thats about all i can come up with.I just put new plugs in it and that seemed to make no difference. If anyone could tell me where to start and what to check that would be fantastic as this Is the first honda I have ever owned and need help.
Thank you in advance.
The pictures were right when I bought it it now has and intake on it. Yes that is a crack in the exhaust manifold. I just bought a set of headers.
I would say not bad for 1400 dollars

Replace the header.
Tell us what ECU is installed.
Post the CEL codes.
Do a full ignition system tune up, including adjusting the ignition timing.

I recall looking at the ecu and it had written on it 97 1.5l but I was like whattttt? Not sure what the codes are but got them scanned and a one was o2 sensor and the other 2 were coolant temp sensors. What does a full ignition system tune up consist of?

You have the wrong ECU for the engine. You need a 96-98 P2P ECU that matches your transmission.
You shouldn't have a problem selling the P2N ECU.

Most of the codes are due to the ECU/engine mismatch.
Install the correct ECU and then go from there.

I have a 95 honda civic hatchback thats sputters wit no cel. An i found the problem today. It is the spring behind the timing shield. It pop off of the little hole it was in. So its trying to throw the timing off. I guess since its not hook on its not tighten, so the crank an the cam wont spin wit enough power. Fix that problem an u should be good to go. Dnt forget to put the motor on time b4 fixing the tensioner an spring. Hope that helps sombody.
