1997 lx 4 door, needs more power....
I have a 1997 lx 4 door. it has a 5 speed transmission. It has the stock d16y7 in it and i want to know some options on making this thing faster than it is. i dont wanna hear intake and exhaust because those dont do anything on a low power engine. im needing info on possible swaps and or boosting this thing. im wanting to stay street legal and pass emissions. im not looking for a rediculous amount of power, just something to help me be able to pass cars on the highway because right now i have to go to 3rd to do anything. I am able to do the work myself, im a mechanic. Ive boosted cars before so im not new to the game, just need info on honda specific things. Maybe cam swaps, head swaps, whole engine swaps and/or boosting. Sorry if i sound demanding but ive been reading these forums for days now and not really getting any answers i want. Thanks for your help.

If your speaking of not wanting to hear intakes or exhausts because your thinking they aren't going to net you any power because you have a "low power engine". Simple bolt on mods are the start on improving power on a honda. Sure you can do cams and all that but if they cant get air in or out they wont be as effective.
As far as engine swaps go, https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/engine-swap-info-faqs-how-ck-engine-lights-878010/
has basicly all you'll need. Im no bost expert so I cant really help you there. I do know that the D series engines have low compression and have mildly strong bottom ends, and are really cheap to boost. With 8lbs on a D you can have the kind of power your looking for. I've seen some really crazy D's making crazy power with some good cams, header, exhaust, some low comp pistions, and a nice snail, for a good price If you want to really build a good turbo D or any turbo I'd hit up the forced induction fourm.

Re: 1997 lx 4 door, needs more power....
what i meant by that was i dont wanna hear someone tell me to put a header and exhaust on it because i know thats not going to net me the power level im looking for. I know all about flow and getting air in and out faster is important. Im just looking for something that will give me a little more power than i have. Like 120 at the wheels is suitable for me. Im not looking to put much money into the idea. I dont want to built the engine either, ill do a head swap if i have to at the most. Maybe a different engine.

the power level you seem to be looking for will take a motor swap or a turbo setup. you wont get any power out of that motor like you are looking for unless you go FI

Your looking for 20 hp basically.
And not looking to put much money into the engine. Id say raise the comp, i/h/e, cams and call it a day.
A swap would be alot more cash then that, and alot more time.

Re: 1997 lx 4 door, needs more power....
well ive heard something about putting a y8 or a zc head on my stock y7 block. whats involved in doing that and what are the benefits of said swap? 99r im not looking to change the internals and im sure shaving the head isnt going to get me much of a compression bump to gain any noticable power. I understand putting an intake and header back exhaust is going to improve flow and was wondering how i go about putting a header and full exhaust and still pass emissions being that my car is obd2? is there a special combination of header and catalytic converter from another car to use because i cant seem to find anything?

the power that you are looking for is not going to be had with swapping the head and doing a mini-me setup. The b series is the easiest swap to perform.

well unfortunately im not looking to put that much money into the car. swapping a b series into it will cost more than im looking to spend. This is my daily driver and as of right now my only running car so whatever i do needs to be completed in 1 day or less. My thoughts are a y8 head with a p2p ecu and a header with full exhaust.
