Are your door handles black? If not, it's not a DX. If it is a DX, then it's aftermarket. USDM only offered moonroof on the EX.

yea my door handles are black. so the moon roof is after market? haha that would explain why my felt on the roof is all ripped up. gotta get that fixed.

There are a number of places that offer both pop up and powered sunroof upgrades. Be glad you got a free $1200 upgrade

As stated above, it is an aftermarket, possilby dealer installed option, sunroof. The controls by the sunroof are a dead give away.
I know that some dealers installed sunroofs as an option, but don't know if the actual sunroof came from Honda.
Either way, it didn't come from the factory with it.

They didn't, they were just aftermarket units bought by a dealership. My local dealership used to install a lot of Perfect Fit bug deflectors and AVS vent visors on new Hondas. Most people didn't want to pay for the real Honda stuff. Same thing here, customer didn't want to pay the extra for an EX over a DX (or in some cases like hatchbacks Honda just didn't offer a factory sunroof over here)

From the description I'd agree. Sounds like a '97 DX sedan with an aftermarket moonroof.
Stock moonroof units have the rubber seal on the glass and no seal on the metal of the roof. The stock moonroof switch is on the driver side of the dash under the cruise control power button and dimmer button and next to the power mirror button and fog light button (or blank space). The stock moonroof tilts open and also slides back into the roof.
Here's an overhead photo of a stock '96-'00 Civic moonroof. Please note the rubber seal on the glass and none on the red metal of the body. The roof skin folds in around the moonroof instead of having a rubber seal (like aftermarket units would have).
