1997 EJ6 - Where do I find a budget manual steering rack?
Hey everyone.
So I got four new tires yesterday and an alignment and they said the only way they could align it was with the steering wheel sideways as I need a new rack and pinion and tie rods. I had noticed it felt a little sloppy, so it seems like they're probably right. I replaced the left inner and outer tie rods less than a year ago with the cheapest ones from autozone, which evidently suck since they're already worn. Where should I buy all this stuff? I really don't want to spend like $600 at Honda, seeing as I just spent $430 on tires and I'm in college and don't have a ton of money. Also, anyone know of a good DIY for this job? I have a shop manual, but just want some H-T perspective.
The car is a 1997 EJ6, tein s techs, koni yellows, GS-R fat fives with Dunlop Direzzas if this helps. And it's non-powered steering.
Thanks!

Bump for a DIY and a good place to buy this stuff! I don't want to end up with garbage, or spend $5-600 if I can help it.

I just replaced my manual with a power rack in my 96, I'll let it go cheap, it has 160k on it but I just swapped it out to have power. I can walk you through the swap its really simple. Only about 10 bolts or less. PM me, I'm in Charlotte, NC

Buy a used one from an import salvage yard and install new inner and outer tie rods on it if needed. Manual racks are usually a safe bet to buy used because they rarely develop problems. They're also pretty easy to remove and install.
You can't align a car when the steering rack and the tie rods have freaking play in them. Why would you want him to waste money?

Man, I'm from Charlotte and my folks still live there, I'll be up for thanksgiving, but I'd like to have this fixed by then and I feel like it would be expensive to ship, but I'll let you know if I can't find something locally.
Thanks for the help guys, you're making it seem like it's not too bad of a job, I was afraid it might take a lot of time, and I can't really go a week or something without my car, I don't have another way to work.
