1996 civic si questions..
hey, ill try to make it as detailed as possible since im limited to 5 posts a day
i have a 1996 civic si, canadian spec, with the Y8 in it.
i have a tick which i beleive is mainly valves, and injectors on the side.
so on the weekend my friend whos a certified tech did the lash while the car was still somewhat warm, and then i drove somewhat hard on it the next day and the ticking seems to be just as loud. we're going to do the adjustment again sunday morning so we can let the car sit overnight. besides valves adjustment, what else could i do to prevent this ticking? when i pulled the valve cover off, it seemed quite clean, i snapped some pics ill upload when im at home.
2nd issue, when we took the valve cover off for valve adjustment, we noticed that 1 bolt (the one closer to the intake manifold, on the passenger side) was completely broken. im presuming overtightened. it must have came like that because i have never touched the engine, im not mechanically inclined..
so the bolt is broken thread up, meaning all the thread is stuck in the head.. how do i remove this without damaging my head?
thanks.. sorry for long post!

Agreed. This problem is a little out of your league then. Take it to someone who can drill it out without destroying your engine. Good luck with your fix, but I don't know if that is what's causing your ticking problems.

take it to someone who is better, someone who knows how to extract the broken bolt or will helicoil if it can't be removed without damaging the thread

I'm wondering why your friend didn't have the answer about the broken bolt.

Re: 1996 civic si questions.. (Syndacate)
NOFX - he has a kit which you lightly drill the bolt and tap this bit into the broken end, and slowly twist it out. im yet to try, and im very hesitant as i cannot afford to repair/replace a head.
syndacate - i know i have injector tick cause ive stuck my head right by the IM and i can hear the injectors, but i have a slight hint that it could be my valves.
i can take a video when im home from work, either tonight or tomorrow depending on if i go to fireworks tonight.
and im sorry if i seem snobby or not open minded with your input. i really do thank you all so far and if im not satisfied with his work i will take it to the honda dealership across the street from work, i just cannot afford a big repair bill this month.

Re: 1996 civic si questions.. (stouzey)
so last night i was gettin ready to drive to vancouver, when i turned the car on i noticed the low oil light stayed on longer than normal.
i popped the hood and only had about 2mm of oil registering on the dipstick
car was still warm, but it was parked flat for about a hour..
so i topped it up, and went to vancouver.. my car smells like burning oil going up hills, i dont even have to be in vtec, it could be around 3-5000rpm, and my y8 kicks in at 5500 or so.
any clues where my oil is going?! i dont burn blue or black, but i can clearly smell burning oil like mentioned above, and my friend in his truck behind me says he can even smell it.
thanks again for any help. my y8 only has 151km on it, so roughly 93,000miles

Re: (squad8)
explain how im going to damage my engine?
i dont touch it unless im 100% sure of what im doing.
im asking for help, so when/if i go to a shop, i can tell them where to look at and not get charged more.
id appreciate help rather than saying take it to a shop.
p.s tonight i should be able to make a video of my tick. my other buddy who builds hondas said the tick sounds fine, but im paranoid so well see

If you smell oil but you don't see it coming out the back of the car... Then you probably have a leak something like the VTEC solenoid gasket or maybe your Oil filter gasket is leaking and dripping on your exhaust causing you to smell it but not see it coming out the tail pipe.

The correct way of doing a valve adjustment, is when the engine is completely cold, not warm. And as far as the stuck bolt, you can either drill it out if you're good ( I suggest practicing first) Or take it to a shop who can do it for you. Mainly a machine shop.
