Default 1996 Civic Coupe Knock Sensor (D16Y5)

I keep getting the knock sensor code on my ecu.
Is the knock sensor necessary?
Can i have the ecu programmed to NOT read it?
Will it cause problems if i dont have the knock sensor?

I searched knock sensor and got a lot of for sale ads.

replacing it(the knock sensor) is the simplest option.
OBD2 ecus cannot be chipped like OBD1 ecus. (that don't care about knock sensors anyway)
