1996-2000 Civic HX What's your MPG????
I'm looking to buy a 98 HX 5 speed manual. The owner claims 43Mpg freeway but the new EPA is rated at 39 mpg highway. I was wondering what you guys are getting now that the car is over 10 years old. Also, how many miles do you guys have on your HX.

My 97 hx I get 40-43 highway without trying too hard but the 99 that I also have only gets about 35-37 at best... however it has p2n-L32 which is a cali spec ecu.

my 97 has 200k and the 99 has 211k miles. From what I can tell the 96-97's are the best years for more mileage, all the cars are the same from 96-98 but different ecu's so I'm sure the fuel maps are a little different for emissions reasons. 99-00 are also obd2a but there are some other differences.

I think I'm gonna go for it. 39 city and 44 highway is too hard to resist with the gas prices. I'd be happy with 35 average.
Is there any common problems with these cars?!I've searched and saw a lot of o2 sensor problems that activates the CEL light. Does hx have special o2 sensor and cat????

5 wire o2 sensor costs $330+... known problems that I have experianced specific to the hx have been o2 sensor, ecu, and clogged egr ports. Honda extended the warranty on certain year/model civic's to 10yr/150k miles and my 97 was included so all the repairs didn't cost me anything. The o2 sensor and clogged egr ports happened around the same time around 110-120k miles, the ecu went bad at 138k so I got real lucky on that one being under warranty.
So I would say for preventitive maintenance it would be wise to clean out the egr at the same time when changing the timing belt.
Good luck finding an ecu for one as they can be hard to find. I've been looking for the new spec for my 99 the p2n-a33 and can't find one anywhere at least not new anyways, the 32 is the old spec and the 33 replaces it also the A series is 49 state federal and L is cali. You can find the cali ones all over ebay but the federal ones seem to be hard to come by.

I didn't wanna start another thread..
What spark plugs and wires should I use? I've heard NGK ZFR4F-11 is good for the hx. Also what transmission fluid should I use? It currently shifts smooth. Should I just use Hondas manual tranny fluid?
Anything else I should replace besides the fluids, wires, and plugs?
Thanks!!
