Is a "brown cap" referring to the bad capacitor or something else?

yes, that's the one.
I was referring to the color of the capacitor in the picture. I dumb it down a little since a lot of people do not know what a capacitor is, including a color reference helps at times.

Yeah, kinda left it as the dumbed down information is a helpful addition to this old thread for searchers. Might stop the layman question being asked again sometime down the road.....

As far as the rated voltage and capacitor longevity goes, no increasing the max rated voltage isn't likely to make it last any longer if it was spec'd correctly to start with. What generally kills electrolytic capacitors is the electrolyte dries out. Don't expect much more than 30 years no matter what.

It's good to know Japanese car manufacturers did not do what everyone else in the electronics industry has been doing for years to keep sales flowing.
