1993 Honda Civic Del Sol main relay problem
Hi everyone, new here and wondering if anyone can help us. We have a 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol 1.6 that was overheating and stalling. We determined that the head was cracked, so we swapped it out with a new head. Changed the timing belt and fuel pump. We start the car and.it starts but when put into gear it would bog out. Checked the main relay and it was really hot. Tested power to the fuel pump and no power, so we changed the main relay. Tried to start the car, we heard the fuel pump come on and the car started. Great. Drove it a few miles to test it no problems, no CEL or overheating, get home and turn it off. 30 minutes later, daughter starts it and it starts but the check engine light was on. Was idling great but concerned about the CEL. After about 5 mins the car died, tried restarting but wouldn't, could not hear the fuel pump come on, main relay was warm not hot. We tried starting it again after a couple of hours and started just fine. I think it may have something to do with the relay getting hot and not providing power to the fuel pump. What can be causing it to heat up?

Resolder the main relay if you haven't already. This goes for any owner of these cars even if it is working at the time.
When CEL comes on there will be a code stored telling why. Pull the codes.

what's your definition of warm and hot? - can you hold it in your hand with some minor discomfort after it being running for 10+ minutes? - that's normal
pull the code(s) stored, go from there.
a far as what can make the thing hot.... there's not a lot. pulling too much power from it, cycling the relays rapidly, faulty relay. (it's a very simple device)
check your fuses, make sure there isn't one that is oversized masking a potential issue.
it's also becoming fairly common for our ECUs to require the electrolytic capacitors to be replaced (getting old sucks) one of the symptoms of this need is that the fuel pump will not turn on. (heat makes this worse)
