I had the same problem with my '92 Si a couple years back when i first bought it. Yeah it was the stat. Got that replaced, the radiator flushed and put in some new coolant.

Let your car idle and warm up.

Your upper radiator hose will heat up first.
When (or if) your thermostat opens up, the lower hose will heat up as it lets coolant run back to the radiator.
If you car starts to overheat and the lower hose hasnt heated up, then your thermostat hasnt opened and should be replaced.

If the lower hose does get hot and it still overheats, then the problem is probably in your fan or the fan switch.

I have the same problem right now. When the car is idle for a while it heats up all the way but then when I take it for a ride it cools down.

ok now that you got a stat, see if that help if it doesn't it's your fan relay switch you said your fan doesn't come on. My friends si would get hot sitting but going down the highway it was fine and he installed a new relay and fixed it.
