Default 12 yr. old power steering fluid OK to change?

Never had any p/s problems....just think its about time to change it. lol Looks brown.

My friend says that I may not want to change it out since p/s fluid is very acidic? And it can ruin seals and stuff? And if there are no probs, just leave it? Is this true?

It wont be a flush, just drain resevoir and fill.

Thanks!!

I would change it immediately. I just did mine a few weeks ago. Make sure to use a ziploc bag to put the end of the hose in before you turn the steering wheel left and right when pumping the fluid, or else you will end up shooting fluid everywhere.

I've heard next to FLUSH the system unless your changing everything. Reason being is after years the dirt and crap gets around the seals and flushing it can remove all the dirt behind and around the seals causing stuff to clog up/ leak.

Just flush it, do it right the first time and don't waste the fluid if you're going to end up having it still mixed with gunk you might feel a difference in the way it feels. it's not that hard, I had to do it a couple of times to get it right. I went to Honda and bought 2 bottles of their ps fluid (I don't know the reason why, but non-OEM brand ps/fluid from like Napa or other automotive stores like that recommends that they NOT BE USED on Honda's and OEM is the preferred way to go)

I got an old coolant bottle and cut a few feet from an old garden hose. Topped off the reservoir with the OEM PS fluid, then connected the garden hose to the return/inlet hose so that whatever fluid that goes through the system goes straight to the coolant bottle. Lift up the front wheels so it turns easier, turn the car on, have somebody turn the wheel left to right until it's difficult to turn. Put the inlet hose back onto the reservoir, refill the reservoir with the rest of the Honda PS fluid. turn the wheel left and right again, fill it back up to the line.

if you use any other fuild, other then OEM, it will leak...

As like a lot of other parts, our PS systems are prissy and only like Honda fuild.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just did this. Pretty eazy. Got out about 22 ounces or 1.4 quarts of old nasty fluid. Filled it up with almost 2 bottles of Honda fluid. Bled. Steering feels bit easier, could be in my head tho....

I've recently just use a syphon to suck out the old one, and replace it with OEM fluid.

Not sure if this is enough, but if you change it regularly, you should be fine.
