Yes.
You can run 10w30 in trans.
I'm using it. Manual says HMTF or 10w30 motor oil for temporary substitute. Either way...it will do no harm.

What trans? 10W30 is fine in '92 - '95 (S20) transmissions, that's what they call for and they tend to eat input shaft bearings if you run Honda MFT. '96 - '00 (S40) call for Honda MTF and tend to shift weird with 10W30 (at least the ones I tried did)

Whut... I just put in Synchromesh 2 weeks ago because the original MTF hasn't been changed for 123k miles.

Oem Honda fluid all the way. Chnaged mine out in my newly purchased dd and could feel the difference and shifted smoother too. Just my 2 cents

Normally that's because no has ever changed the transmission fluid before, or it was only done a few times when the car was new to comply with the terms of the warranty.

I have a lot of experiecnce with this subject and everything I say is 1st hand. 10w30 and your transmission WILL NOT LAST. Alldata does say to use 10W30 or 10w40 but honda mtf is preferred. Honda mtf is 10w30 but they have some additaves in there also. you cant run it in your motor. And syncromesh is good for a trany on its way out like said earlier.

Re: 10w30 for tranny fluid??
When you guys say the tranny is on it's way out, do you mean the bearings and synchro are wearing out or something worse?
I think my ISB is wearing out, but I can't tell if my synchros are/aren't. Well, it doesn't grind in any gears, but it makes a loud, harsh sound while I'm on the throttle. The sound is more present when I'm in 1st and 2nd, but less (if not, nonexistent) in 3rd to 5th. IIRC, that's related to the ISB and not the synchros?

I guess I should have worded it a little different. the syncromesh is good when you have one thats starting to grind. sometimes it can help with that but not always. either way i say use honda mtf. I buy it by the case at my local honda dealer.

Re: 10w30 for tranny fluid??
I deal with these transmission on a regular basis. honda mtf IS 10w30, but with additives. so if honda mtf "kills" input shaft bearings, then so does 10w30. Again, I deal with these transmissions everyday. Im not the best by any means, its just I have been there, done that. If you use 10w30 you transmission will not last

It see's 125+ miles 4-5 days a week, plus being driven on the weekends.
I know it's fine, and gets 10W30 becuase my buddy and I do all the work to the car...
I've driven it, the transmission is perfect.

Re: 10w30 for tranny fluid??
Honda mtf has much better metal on metal protection, 10w30 does not and will wear metal parts. Mtf is more 5w40 synthetic and is better all the way.. We use it in 800+ drag cars and haven't had much issues (dog gear trans)
