10w-30 as tranny fluid? possible?
I was at a shop and there was a stock civic on the lift. I saw the mechanics there putting in 10w-30 as the manual tranny fluid. I thought only Honda MTF should be used for honda trannys?

Yeah you can use motor oil. Most trannies use that.
For your Honda tell them you want MTF.

the honda tech i know, and who knows hondas more so than anyone else uses 10w-30 and reccomends it. the only drawback that you have to change it more frequently. Otherwise its all good. Use MTF if you want full service life intervals, i think MTF is good for like 20,000 miles. Whereas 10W-30 needs to swtiched every 7500 to 10k

as far as the oil, my friend has a gsr and the Acura tech stated he should have only used Honda MTF but motor oil works well in most other trannies

Take a look at your owner's manual and will tell you that using motor oil should only be used temporarily and should not be permanent. You should use Honda Genuine MTF and reduce the wear and tear of your tranny.

You are so right. Better to get it done right this time and not have to worry about a new tranny later or repairing that one because of the wear produced.

It says 10w-30 in my manual for a quick fix kinda thing.. I don't trust it though, I will only use Honda MTF or Redline..

u should only use 5w- 30 motor oil
5w 30 is intended for motors that experience whether of 20 degrees or below..
unless it gets that cool, 10w 30 is good.
