rule of thumb
I was reading and look at some interesting facts i found:
here are some good information i gathered from various magazines on making power and dropping weight in your car...this is only a rule of thumb, and is to not be mistaken for exact numbers, because all cars are different
1. A 10% drop in the temperature going into your motor will result in a 1% horsepower gain
2. For every 1000 lb. drop in a car will result in 1 second off your quarter mile (I don't know if this is true in imports, because i got this info. out of a hot rod magazine)
3. For every 10 lb. drop in a car will result in a 1 horsepower gain (This doesn't exactly mean 1 horsepower gain to your motor but you will feel a 1 horsepower gain on your 1320 dash, or 10 horsepower faster with 100 lb. drop)

1. I can believe this.
2. I think it's less than 1000lbs in my opinion...something closer to 600 give or take.
3. I think this is just restating 2. since motors don't gain hp when the car drops weight it's just that they pull that weight more efficiently.

will 100lbs is 1/10 of a sec so that kinda makes since...
10 lbs = 1 hp well just figure this and you'll be doing good.
weight / hp = how many pounds you are pulling per hp (did i say that right) so basically you lower that and you will have a better power to weight ratio i think a civic is around 20lbs or per hp and a 1999 mustang saleen is like 6 per hp...atleast that is what i got from a site. hope that helps.

yea..that's why it's critical that you watch what you put in your car if your concerned with keeping the weight of ur car to a minimal

Re: rule of thumb (purek9hybrid)
A rod unbalanced 4oz puts force of over 400lbs on the crank at 7500 rpm.
1 lbs of unsprung weight = 10 lbs off sprung weight. (1lbs lighter flywheel is like takin 10 lbs off your car.)

Re: rule of thumb (redcxhatch)
Major problem with V8's, you can gain like 30-40hp buy balancing bottom end. I wish i could get the same results from my 1.5!
