Default 00 Si speedo problem

Hey guys,
So I have been reading on here and searching on here for problems people have been having with their speedos.

My understanding is that if the VSS is no longer working then the engine will not engage Vtec.

So what would be a good place to start looking if The speedo stays at 20 mph as soon as the key is turned on and does not move at all yet the engine runs and vtec engages perfectly fine. All other gauges are working just fine. Once in a while the speedo will jump up and start working fine. But as soon as the next key cycle happens then the speedo goes right back to the same problem. This has gotten progressively worse as time goes on.

I havent really dug into this problem yet I just figured I would gather ideas before checking some things.

Checked what appears to be the Vss plug and made sure it was clean.... Also when moving at about 5 miles an hour the speedo acually bounces a little bit from like 18-20mph then as the speed increases it stays right at 20..........

Take out the cluster, and retighten the screws behind the speedo.

Do the tripmeter and odometer work? If so, the VSS is fine. Check the connectors at the rear of the gauge assembly for bent or damaged terminals. If they're okay, then the speedometer is probably bad.

The Odo and trip odo dont work at all along with the speedo. I have taken the guage cluster out and checked it and everything appeared fine. If my ODO and trip ODO are fine but Vtec is still fine then that seems to contradict the VSS making vtec not work?????

Your information suggests that the gauge assembly itself or the VSS wire and C411 connector leading to the gauge assembly are bad. See area of circuit below circled in red.

Hey thanks for the input sounds to me like its time to pull the cluster once again and get out the trusty DVOM and do some resistance checks.....

Ok jumped on my shopkey and found the test procedure to diagnosing. Thought I would post it since maybe it may help someone else.

Disconnect Instrument cluster 22-pin connector "B". Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector "B" terminal No. 2 (Blue/White wire). Ensure one front wheel is blocked. While observing voltmeter, slowly rotate other front wheel. If voltage is toggling, replace speedometer. If voltage is not toggling, repair open in Blue/White wire between VSS and instrument panel 22-pin connector "B"

The diagram (taken from the 96-00 Civic service manual) that I posted indicates that the terminal to test is B11 rather than B2.

there's a TSB over this, my 99 civic ex has the same problem, some ek civics had a problem with the wiring harness rubbin on the intake manifold and it leads to a malfunctioning speedo

This TSB is associated with a blown fuse 15 under the dash; however, it's for 96-99 Civics not 00 Civics. Nonetheless, it still might be worth checking whether fuse 15 is blown.

Well I will pull it out and check it. Then we know what pin it is once and for all HAHA......

No really thanks for the responses. I think this will go smoothly once I get to checking it out.

Heh! There you go! Replace your Si speedo with a HX, like I did.

LoL!

You can be the second guy in the world with a HX speedo in your Si cluster...

My '99 B16A2 VTEC runs like a striped-*** ape, and it gets 40+ MPG to boot!

BTW, my HX speedo is 100% accurate too!

I always forget to reset the maintenance light.

I've owned two 6gen Vics. In 9 years, I reset the other one once (in 187K miles), and this one never.

LoL!

I guess I need a light to remind me to reset the light...

Haha yea!

I pulled the cluster today and performed the voltage check on the 22-pin connector "B" Blue/White stripped wire and sure enough..... I have voltage toggling thru the wire so this indicates a faulty gauge cluster. I will be looking for a replacement.

I think there can only be enough room for one HX speedoed Si cluster in this world lol!

Whew!

I dodged the bullet again!

BTW, good detective work, figuring out the voltage problem...
