Default '00 EX coupe with B18C1 swap

Purchased this car yesterday. The guy only had it for 6 months and gave up on it. Check engine light is on. VTEC wont activate. Autozone couldn't pull an engine code, so I took it to Honda. Their scanner is communicating with the ECU and showing up as an OBD2 (possibly Si ECU, but not 100% sure), but it's not pulling any codes at all no matter what they do.

I need recommendations. I was thinking about purchasing a new ECU and starting from there. If I'm wrong, please let me know. I haven't tuned cars in about 15 years. Last Mod was converting a 94 DX 4 door to a SOHC VTEC with a manual conversion. My shop in NY did all the engine work.

I now live in Lawton, OK and there are no custom/tuner shops in the area.

ok. I found a post with instruction on how to do
that. I’ll give it a shot when I get the car back. They’re replacing a couple of busted components.

So, since the scanner can’t pull any OBD2 codes, I’m gonna have to use the old OBD1 method. Would that be an indicator that it’s an OBD1 ECU?

The OBD-2 service port could be damaged. Checking the ECU will tell a lot about what you are experiencing. Post a picture of your ECU.

You mentioned no codes, but you did not mention whether you have a CEL (malfunction indicator lamp) on ??? Running crappy doesn't necessarily mean there are electrical issues. One tooth out of mechanical time will cause VTEC to appear to be inoperative. There are quality Import shops that are reasonably close to you if you need help.

I guess I should pay closer attention. So OP needs to short the two-wire service connector over near the ECU and check the codes manually then.

Got the car back from Honda. Got to get a better look at it. Not a b16. It’s a B18C1. Pics attached.

So, is there any other way to tell if it’s the correct ECU?

There suppose to be a sticker with the ecu code on the inside of the ecu as well, you'll have to remove the cover.

didnt know there was a sticker on the inside. Yeah. It’s a p2t. I just ordered a p72 from eBay. Should be here in a week.

on another note. I’m pretty sure this is just the beginning of my headaches with this car. I broke the fuel pressure regulator yesterday. Return line was ridiculously tight. 😪

skunk 2 pro series previous owner disconnected a sensor. And the vacuum line for the intake to the cylinder cover is also missing.

I could never confirm if it still possible to run the stock p72 w/o the IAB. Hope you don't get any CEL's.

If I get the P28, would It still work with the same ECU harness, or would I also need to buy an adapter? Where do you recommend buying these?

Would a chipped P28 stil be able to pull engine codes from a scanner or would I need something else to figure out CEL issues?

Ok so, I got the chipped p28 installed. She’s running a lot better.

New problems. Tach is dead. No readings at all. Speedometer and odometer seem to be on the fritz too. They work once in a while. Speed is off by about 5% but that’s no big deal.

Any ideas what’s causing these issues?

Stock gauge cluster. No external tach.
