Default 00 d16y7 engine w/ 99 d16y8 head? Need some help.

Ok, so...i have a 99 Civic EX coupe auto. Bought it with a blown block (head is still good). I just picked up a fresh d16y7 pulled from a 2000 civic LX auto with only 78,000 miles for a great price. i plan on putting my d16y8 head from the blown motor onto the y7 block. I figured while the motor is out i might as well do a complete tune up and replace headgasket, ac belt, alt belt, ps belt, timing belt and tensioner, water pump, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket and all seals, distributor, plugs and wires.

What i need help on is what do i ask for when i get there? parts for the y7 or the y8? From my understanding so far is that i need the y8 head gasket. What do i ask for as far as belts and pump, etc???? I went on autozone.com and got all the prices for everything (apperently the prices are the same between the y7 and y8.

Total will cost me 390.00. May as well since the motor is already out, right?

Any help would be appreciated!

They're both OBD2 so all the parts are interchangeable. The y8 head will add some more HP since you'll get VTEC. Nothing spectacular but you'll notice the difference. Also you'll need the wire harness and the ecu for the y8.

The specs are a ruff estimate I cant remember off the top of my head.

d16y8=SOHC VTEC 127 HP
d16y7=SOHC 107HP

d16y7 is rated at 105 hp. Y8 at around 125? Are you also planning to swap intake manifolds as well?

You will need

y7/y8 head bolts

y8 head gasket

the knock sensor (you have that on your old engine)

You can use the y8 or y7 dizzy (might as well use the y8)

you can use the P2P (ex ECU ) you have already.

The oil hole in the block is already removed on the y7 engines so you dont need to do that.

and just use your ex wireharness

i THINK thats it, please anyone add more if im missing anything.

both engines are OBD2B so it should all come together fine, i dont think you will even need to manually wire up anything.

y does the knock sensor need to be swapped? and what oil hole do you speak of?

My last project was an 89 crx si w/ 1st gen b16a converted to obd-1 with a peaced up turbo setup. i just sold it because i wanted something with power everything and a/c. I bought this car from the dealer i was working at for 700 bills with a blown block. Im not new to the game...but im new to the d-series. Just a lil background for the wondering.

Haven't replaced a headgasket before so could some 1 give me some step by step directions on taking off the d16y7 head and replacing the gasket and putting the d16y8 head on.

knock sensor needs to be in so your car will run correctly with the EX ECU, it screws right in to the sameplace that the y8 screws in. The blocks are the same. just take it off the y8 and put it on the y7.

When taking off the head you have to unscrew the head bolts in some kinda order use search for that. once you have the head off its pretty easy. if you unscrew the headbolts in the wrong order theres a chance the head will warp. 99% of the info is on this site just search really. hondas are like legos =P

If you have to take pictures too. ( i took a few)

alot of people wil bring up " make sure to remove the oil jet screw" but the y7 does not have one. The older engines do. so ignore that, if your wondering look up the mini me write up in the FAQ. (its for the z6 engine tho.

so the y7 block has the hole for the knock sensor but it doesn't have the knock sensor? The block doesn't have oil squirters? How does it cool down?

ok, so tomorrow im going to order/buy my head gasket for the swap. Do you think it would be wise to do a timing belt/tensioner, water pump, alt belt while the motor is out? How much should i expect pay tomorrow if i purchase all of these things?

so i figured im gonna hold off on the water pump, but im going to buy a new timing belt, alt belt and a/c belt. now...since im going to be running the d16y7 block with y8 head what belts am i suppose to be looking for??? for which 1? the y7 or y8? Im going to be running the y8 a/c pump, the y8 alt, but im going to be running the y7 power steering pump. Are the belts interchangable? or do i have to get the belts for the specific motor?
