You have to clean out the core underneath the dash behind the glove box. It's all the mildew build up. This is in the Evaporator box.

Could be a dead rodent or mildew as the previous guy said. It could be anywhere in the duct work. Start hunting, and good luck to you sir.

Not a rodent, it doesnt smell like something died. It just has an awful smell.
Is there any other way without removing dash, its cold and rainy all week...

You may need to remove the dash to inspect the air ducts and heater core (and the evaporator if you have A/C). In the meantime, removal of three screws under the dash will drop the blower motor down. Check whether this exposes anything resembling a corpse or feces.

That's unfortunate as now there's much more work for you to do. With the blower removed, do you smell the bad odor inside the air duct? Did you use a mirror and light to look inside the duct for foreign objects?

Re: 00 civic ex heater smells terrible.
Thanks for the diagram.
Took my car out today...
Heater took 45 minutes to start blowing hot.
Car was at normal temp within 2 minutes.
Could these be related?

You MUST have a coolant reservoir. Don't run the engine without one. When the engine is hot, coolant spills out of the radiator, and when it cools, air is getting sucked into the cooling system. After you install a reservoir, then top off with coolant and then bleed the cooling system.
Do you see any moisture dripping from under the dash? Are your carpets wet?
Do you have A/C?

I have to get my radiator set back up for one then. Got it like that with the car.
No moisture, carpets aren't wet. I do have A/C tho.

You may be able to get a cheap reservoir at a junk yard. Keep the radiator topped off with coolant (not water), and get a reservoir ASAP before you destroy the engine.
If the A/C drain hose from the evaporator is clogged, water can get trapped in there and fester.

Re: 00 civic ex heater smells terrible.
Ac hoses, compressor and evaporator can are brand new and were installed this summer.
I have to get something welded to my radiator to run a resorvoir.
