is "dry revving" really bad?
a friend of mine is trying to convince me that revving your engine with the clutch in can stretch and/or break your connecting rods. his dad told him this and he is pretty knowlagable(sp?) as he has a 8 sec corvette drag car that he personally built. well thanks for your input

yes. it will destroy your engine. should be less harmful(because revving the engine is very harmful) than running your car to the same rpm in gear(driving) because you are under load. but then again:

I rev my engine only to listen for any odd noises. Free reving the engine is not going to cause any rod stretching, some of the faster drivers are still only drivers, your friend probably got his fathers words mixed up. In -fact, this may be the most ignorant topic I have read in a long time.

BTW, I think that revving too high on a motor without load might not be the best thing for it. The load stabalizes the spinning mass, its kinda like the fact you should never dry fire a powerful bow. I don't think it will hurt your engine at all, it just isn't good for it.
