Default Mods for the 1.5t

Hey guys. I just bought the new '17 civic hatch 6sp 1.5t. The motor has definitely got some pep. But I'm curious what modifications are out there for the motor so far? As far as I see, the motor is still relatively new so it's understandable that not much is out yet. But are there any tunes, intakes, exhausts, turbo equipment (idk like external wastegates, intercoolers, boost controllers, ?). Really just wondering what's out there. I'm fairly new to turbo motors as this is the first I've owned so don't throw me to the wolves just yet. lol. I'm super curious and intrigued by this super unique looking car that I'd really love to make it my own. Let me know guys! Marcos

It's not even a year old yet...

No, no company has had any time yet to do R&D or make any products. And honestly, you should be skeptical of the first few companies/products that come out. Less reputable or honorable vendors may come out with things that are unstable prematurely just to be the "first" to support the engine.

Give it time and wait for a company to have some proven results. At least a year or two....

Unless you want it bad enough (and have connections) to have a reputable builder use your car as a mule.

Yeah.

The other thing to consider is this is the first time Honda has produced an engine from the factory with a turbo. We don't even know if the 1.5T or K20C may have issues STOCK that eventually lead to premature wear/recalls.

There's a lot of time, R&D, and evaluations that should be done before modding a new platform.

We just had one of the 6 speed 1.5T hatch Sports come back with 90 miles on the clock and bent valves. Sounds like Honda thinks they may have mis-shifted and over revved it (is 5th to 2nd on the highway not ok? Lol) but they do not want us to open it up to inspect. We have a new complete engine en route from England and are to ship the bad one back for the engineers to inspect. Hopefully they are right and it was abuse and not a mechanical failure that we'll see more of.

There are some a few intakes out for them and Hondata has a reflash for it as well. Other than that its pretty early on. I am sure mods will follow soon.

^^Can't you diagnose an engine overrev by scanning the ECU?

I wasn't the tech assigned to it so I don't know many details on it. I do know it wouldn't stay running and had no compression in two cylinders. If the owner had the codes cleared or the battery was disconnected the freeze data would be lost. I doubt that happened unless the guy knew what he was doing and was trying to cover up his mistake, but Honda was adamant about getting it back undisturbed. They sent a whole new engine and trans in a big black crate straight from England.

Hondata FlashPro will be available in mid December... it looks like there are good gains from the improved basemaps alone... and you can tune it.

But then you just answered your own question in the positive, plus, the Honda City platform.

Ford had a similar issue in their Ecoboost engines, which (like the 1.5t) is direct-injected. This could be LSPI.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-speed_pre-ignition

Basically, the damaged engine would be because he's in too high a gear under low engine load, and trying to boost a tiny turbocharger too high. Mainly happens to DI engines which is why is why you don't see the issue on Older engine turbocharger retrofits.

OP: Be patient about the modifications. It used to take a couple of years to get a full set of modifications introduced into the market. I know it's 2016, but for the love of God, give SEMA a chance to react.

The parts will come. The learning curve is steep, these engines are direct injection and the wastegates are electronic Melco types, so your typical aftermarket ecu's (AEM, Motec, Haltech) won't run the engine until an external Di box is added or the ecu is redesigned altogether.

Direct Injection adds a whole other dimension to tuning, you now have to work very closely with injection angle and pump control to make the thing run worth a damn. The piston top designs are very complex to work with Di too. I think there is going to be quite a bit of potential in these little 1.5L engines. The K20C is pretty stoutly built, but it's only familiar as K engine by the name. Also Di, it has phasers on both cams but VTEC only on the exhaust side, truly designed from the ground up to be a turbo engine and almost impossible to make any power with the turbo off of it.

The good news on the new ecus: Good lambda control so the car can run in closed loop all of the time, good knock control, electronic wastegates and boost control (mmm pid closed loop!). Should make for nice stable tunes, depending on what features Hondata & KTuner are able to unlock.

Sorry man. A lifetime ago I did some mods on a friend's 6 cylinder Nova and he almost blew it up trying to reach his normal shift point (street marker).

Now we have made the firmware for reflashing ECU. Unfortunately in our country, that civic are not yet on sale, but in the neighboring already have multiple instances. will test soon, there is work to do, should get something interesting. Ignition depends on the EGT, all in adults. Somehow in Wikipedia it have 16 psi boost, but really there 10psi.
