Trunk Garnish Change (09 back to 06-08)
I know a lot of people, myself included dislike the big chrome rear piece on the trunk of the 09+ Civics. The 06-08 Civics had a flush, body colored piece in that place instead, which is more appealing.
I know this is a simple writeup, but I'm doing it anyway, as I hope that it'll eventually help someone.
What you'll need:
-A 09+ Civic
-The replacement part (I bought mine from collegehillshonda for about 75 bucks to my door)
-A 10mm socket, an extension, and a ratchet
-A pair of angled needle nose plyers
-Possibly a second set of hands to help you hold the clips shut while you lift the trim piece off
How To:
This is what the back of a dirty 09+ Civic SI sedan looks like. We're going to swap the big chrome piece right above the license plate.
This is the Honda part number for the replacement part in Alipine White.
Plugging the guys I buy things from. Always great prices, good service, and quick shipping.
Open the box, and you'll have your replacement part, already painted and color matched, in a nice little bag.
Sweet overexposed picture of the part in the trunk.
The pile of tools I grabbed to do the swap. The angled needle nosed pliers worked the best out of all of them I grabbed. Some of the white squeeze clips you'll see later are in spots that are tough to reach.
So open the trunk up, and take this single bolt out first. It's on the passenger side of the trunk, just to the passenger side of the H emblem.
So long story short, you're going to have to pinch these little white guys, and start working the trim piece out, one side at a time. I started on the drivers side, and worked the clips out while pulling up on the trim piece from the outside. There are 5 of the white clips, and the two nearest the center are the hardest to reach.
This is another shot of the new piece in the trunk that shows the location of all the clips.
Keep at it and the chrome piece will come loose. This is the old chrome one side by side with the new painted one. If you do tear up any of those white clips, don't sweat it, as the replacement has new clips in it.
Side by side comparison with the old dirty chrome one and the new painted one. In addition to being painted versus shiny, the new chrome piece does not sit flush with the body.
And here it sits finished.
Oh, and I decided to pull the Civic emblem off too.
