Is this okay?

Hey guys, I'm kinda new here, and I'm new to Honda as well.

Before, I've owned different cars, and so has my father. (Nissan 350z, Audi RS4 (current), BMW M3, and Audi S4), and I have to say I like my Si the most out of all of them. It's no where near the fastest, but it does outhandle the S4 and goes right with the Z. And gas? I'm getting almost 30MPG!!!! I haven't owned the others, but the Si is actually mine. I've driven all of them.

Enough with my boring story!

Anyways, I just bought the car, and I wanna ask you guys a few questions to make sure everything is alright so far,

1. I've been driving manual for a while now. It's pretty much second nature. But it's so hard not to peel out when letting off the clutch in this car. A small touch to the gas sends it glying to 4,500 RPM. 19/20 1st gear acceleration attempts, the tires never screach, but that one time I may get a churp. Is this okay?

2. I have 125 miles on the car. I've taken it to 6,000 two times now. http://is.rely.net/1-92-65076-l-NREc...mLFY3DaZnA.gif One time was when I was racing a friend, (I did NOT GO FULL THROTTLE OR CLOSE), but I quickly hit 2nd then third. I normally am in 4th gear at or below 3,000RPM.

3. Can I safely use full throttle at 600 miles?

Thank you guys very much! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/embeer.gif

1. dont know but from what i've seen/heard its pretty easy to peel out.

2. you're fine as long as you didnt hear a clunk...but dont get into a habit of it too early.

4. i'd wait till 1000

Re: Is this okay? (pd0019)

1. i guess it's all driving style but on normal acceleration i dont "peel out"

2. ???

3. i didnt follow normal recommended break-in procedures. with past experience in building motors i was doing full throttle runs within 50 miles on the odometer. almost at 10K miles now and the motor is fine. it doesn't hurt to follow what the book says i guess.

Re: Is this okay? (dirtySOHC's)

Sorry guys, when I say peel out I mean my tires just churped a little bit. It's never longer than like 1/10 a second, but I don't do it anymore haha.

Anyways, I feel bad for my car now! http://is.rely.net/1-92-30009-l-tEzP...BTGi0jOCgA.gif I had my first race today! A red new 2008 convertible Mustang pulled up to me with 2 people in the car. We were both revving, I let the clutch go kinda quick at 4500 and I started to pull on him a tiny bit. The v-tec hit, I got to 8200, did a quick shift, floored it in 2nd and it churped a tiny bit but I toasted the guy.

I then took it easy for the rest of the ride. Do you think that hurt my motor?

Lol at this and other break in methods resembling the owner’s manual.

I have been going by the method found in this website before I even found that website. I have seen this 1st hand and this guy’s website only confirms it. Actually the best way to break in an engine is either on a chassis or engine dyno.

Even if you were to attempt to break it using whatever method you feel best, unless you had your car towed directly from the assembly line to your driveway your engine has already been redline and beaten on. If you only knew how many hands your car has passed thru before you took delivery.

Re: Is this okay? (Kidnkorner)

That's what I've been doing. Running it harder in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and modulating my speed.

When I do get to 700-800 miles or so, I'm gonna launch it to get a 0-60 test. What do you guys reccomend is the best RPM to launch at, or should I just let the clutch off semi fast at 4500 RPM?

Re: Is this okay? (CivicSi2008PB)

You guys must think I'm an idiot or something, but I've got some more news:

I just raced some guy on the road (I won by the way) by flooring it in 1st and 2nd until I hit 3rd gear. I took it easy again on the ride home. Is my car okay?

PS I've got only about 300 miles on it. http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Yeah it'll be fine until you run into problems anyway. lol You really can't tell the difference til years from now when stuff start breaking down.

What you are doing now is not properly breaking it in as suggested by the factory. It's really not that big of a factor such as the car gonna break down tomorrow because of it. If the break in effect the car that much, the factory would of broke it before they sell it. Then again I'd hate to be the person buying the car from you used.

Re: Is this okay? (CivicSi2008PB)

Turn off stability control and you will be able to launch better.

Re: Is this okay? (ju5tchi11in)

I don't care about launching better, I just want to know if my car you think is okay after pushing it a little when it hasn't reached 600 miles. Thanks.

The factory method is complete crap as I mentioned above.

I read somewhere (not necessarily from a reputable source) that it is best to 'push' a new engine in the first 20 miles because it will actually make it perform better since you are doing something with the cylinder walls and piston rings or something like that..it was like a year ago lol..

Re: Is this okay? (07SIcpe)

hard accelerations and decelerations during the motors first 20 miles will quickly and properly seat the rings.

you want to do WOT runs in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. you don't neccessarily need to take it to redline though.

Re: Is this okay? (07SIcpe)

When I first got the car, I didnt even know about v-tak because I drove a honda hybrid before I got my SI. You should have seen my face when I took it to redline. http://is.rely.net/1-92-30008-l-au16...EFX98SjN8A.gif

Anyways, I have been v-takin since I got the car but just not as much in the begining. As long you dont red line or over rev to much you will be fine. Even redlining past the powerband wont hurt your engine unless you keep on it and blow something.

you probably shouldn't be racing on the roadways, esp if you are not used to the car yet.

Yeah...lol...and if it makes you worry so much. If you worry about it, be nice to your car. It's that simple.

Got some advice for you.
Go back to the dealer and return the car. Just looking over the absolute crap you've been posting, you need to invest in a decent bicycle, not a car or anything that has an internal combustion engine.

This car is a high-performance car. This means it is made to out-perform other vehicles and if you're afraid of the consequences STOP beating on it..
I have never had a problem with 'chirping' the tires unless I am purposely doing it. Let up on the clutch a little earlier so you don't rev it up so much..

And I definitely agree with ^^^ because why did you buy the Si model if you don't know anything about it? The dealer must have been pushing the Si really hard for you to just jump on it. Did you research it? Take the bus or walk but this is not for you my friend...

It's a civic, not a porsche. Research it? are you serious? it's a compact gas saver, not a high performance track machine.
