Re: Motortrend first drive of 2012 civic
To me, I think the new SI engine is a big let down. The original Si with 160hp was at the magical 100hp/L mark. The next Si was a hatch with the wimpy 2L/160hp motor and fell short in many ways for Honda. Then came the new Si coupes with a 2L/197hp, motor which put Honda back at the magical 100hp/L mark again (more or less). The new Si with the 2.4L motor should have had 240hp... In it's market, it's competing with cars that decimate it power wise and an upgrade to 2.4L with only 4 extra hp and few pounds of torque just doesn't cut it (regardless of the RPM it's delivered at). I would be embarrassed to release that Si with any less than the 100hp/L 240hp, if I were Honda. It's not an Si anymore, it's a baby Accord.

The biggest letdown of the new civic si is the fact that it only has a real vtec camshaft on the intake cam only and that the header is cast into the head which means no more header options. Talk about honda giving up on the aftermarket potential of this car.

honda should have a suggestion page or listen to the crowed that would atleast be interested in the the car only certain ppl are gonna buy a si and those certain ppl would love 240whp and a nice chunk of tq to go with it ... if not i see it bein left in the dust by alot of sports cars around its price range , yea the 30flbs of tq is nice but not enought to justify going out and replacing your old si with the new one or buying a already pre 2012 si

If Honda really wanted to recapture the market they would've used something similar to the F20C from the S2000. I don't understand people's preoccupation with torquey fwd cars when all theyre going to do is spin and torque steer.

I agree the new SI is a letdown, but your facts are wrong. The Civic Si started in '84, had a D16 and 122 hp. Far from the 100hp/L mark.

You're talking about a car that we never saw. Badging is often different among countries. Canada got both an Si and Si-R from 99-00, ironically enough. What we saw from 84-85 was a Civic S. The Si hatchback never hit until 1986, and that was with a 1.5L making 91hp.

Dude...talk about incorrect facts! Before you correct someone, at least make sure your details are in order (which they absolutely are not--at least as far as North America is concerned).

got a call from the dealership the other day saying that the new Si's have been delayed approximately 4 months. so if you were waiting, now you can wait longer, til the end of summer it seems

Not to mention, the masses were screaming for more midrange. That's what they tried to give us I think.

BOOOOOOOOORING. They got it exactly right, it's a boring "Baby Accord" with a nice 4-banger.
The changes to the engine are exciting (very exciting). However, as far as ascetics go, the Si is missing a stance that separates the men from the boys. For someone who isn't emotionally attached to Honda, they aren't going to pick the Si over other equivalent 2012 models...

Re: Motortrend first drive of 2012 civic
Guys, this K24 in the new Civic is the same K24 in the TSX, that is if no one else mentioned it.
Umm you do realize the heritage and history of the Si goes WAY back beyond the 99-00 model year, right?
The Si goes all the way back to 1984. The Si evolved from the S trim which was "Sport" when Honda introduced fuel injection it became Sport Injected or Si.
I currently have a 1992 Honda Civic Si, it came with anemic SOHC VTEC 1.6 (D16Z6) making 125 BHP but I swapped it out for a JDM B18C.
And FYi, the B16A and 100hp per liter came out in the 80's too.
