more horsepower for cheap
I have a 2013 Honda civic SI and I was just wanted to know what I could do. I'm a lance corporal in the marine corps and don't really have a whole lot of money to spend on car parts. Any advise??

Re: more horsepower for cheap
LCpl, stay away from the go-go juice and boost until you have a better understanding of those. If you want gains, start with the basics. A good naturally aspirated(N/A)power gain is as basic as a new filter and intake plumbing as well as a good performance exhaust. The exhaust that Honda put on is pretty good already, with a balance of flow and back-pressure to allow for good torque and high RPM breathing at wide open throttle. Any N/A build is dependant on back-pressure for optimal peformance as low end torque can be reduced with less back pressure. Stay away from large bore exhausts and higher flow systems as they are for boost charged systems where the back pressure is found in the turbo and the supercharger ( system dependant).
Look around at what the other N/A guys are doing to their engines and take some cues from there.
I am running a bone stock 2010 FA5 Si sedan with a Type R brake upgrade. I believe that performance is nothing without a good set of stoppers.
Good luck with the build.

Re: more horsepower for cheap
There are ways that you can increase horsepower within a budget. Below are some modifications that you can do to your car to improve power for under $100
Drop in Air filter: A drop in air filter, is a simple and easy way to improve power without much work. You can typically install this modification within 15-30 minutes and most air filters cost under $50. The nice thing about a drop in air filter, is that you don't need to replace the entire intake system such as cold air intake or a short ram intake with a to improve horsepower
Aftermarket Exhaust Muffler: Some mufflers are costly, while others are under $100. An example is Megan Racing Mufflers which sound great and help to improve exhaust flow by replacing that stock restrictive muffler. A good muffler not only improves horsepower, but it also adds aesthetics to your car and gives your car a modified look.
High Flow Catalytic Converters: We just talked about mufflers, which are one of the most restrictive parts of your exhaust. However, usually a factory catalytic converter is THE most restrictive part of your exhaust. If it's legal in your state, you can replace your factory catalytic converter with a high flow catalytic converter and feel an immediate increase in power. The good thing about a quality high flow catalytic converter is that they are generally safe for the environment, and can be had for under $100.
Aftermarket Exhaust Headers: It might be your thinking that headers are over $100, but not all of them. are. Depending on your application, you can find headers for way under. The factory header is generally not designed for power, so replacing it can improve horsepower and torque while still not breaking the bank.
High Performance Engine Oil
High Performance Engine oil: We've seen tests where high quality performance engine oil such as Royal purple has improved horsepower and torque significantly. Performance synthetic oil reduces friction and heat in your engine which can rob it of power. Using quality oil can help you gain some power while being way under $100.

Drop in Air filter: A drop in air filter is just that a better filter... it doesn't give you more power it filters better! To gain more power the pipping size would need to change and be positioned where it can grab cooler air instead of the heat soaked air in the engine bay! No real horsepower gained here with a drop in filter
Aftermarket Exhaust Muffler: Yes replacing your exhaust can help to free up power but that would mean not just doing the catback but also changing the header which does add to the cost!.
High Flow Catalytic Converters: Yes having a high flow cat can help you pass emission if it apply's to your states... but running no cat will free up more power.
Aftermarket Exhaust Headers: Good luck find a quality designed header for anywhere near 100$... the best bang for the buck header is the Skunk2 Alpha which is on point with price.
High Performance Engine Oil
High Performance Engine oil: And the might... the test showed using a thinner oil helped to gain a pony or two if anything... the reason ppl use a slightly thicker oil is because they are running the car a little harder. Using a good quality synthetic oil 5w30 and good filter will help keep your motor healthy for sure... changing it at the right intervals is more crucial certailny on Kseries to avoid having chain stretching.

Also you forgot to mention that you will need some sort of engine management software to maximize the power that the exhaust and header will supply!
So you getting Hondata will set you back anywhere from 500$-700$ depending if you get used or new.
