Default How to avoid "ricey" sounding exhaust systems?

Hello, I am interested in buying an aftermarket muffler for the hell of it. What aspects of a muffler/car make a car sound like an angry bee? Will a 200$ Flowmaster muffler give me these problems? I don't want to go through the process of installing a new muffler only to find out that my car sounds like ****. The Flowmaster 12414310 DBX is what I was thinking of purchasing.

Engine and all modifications make a difference. A D16 is going to have a different tone than a D15. Stock intake will make a difference in exhaust note than a cold air intake. A short ram intake is going to be different than a cold air intake. I believe if you're just throwing a muffler on a stock engine, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the wisdom. The muffler is just one of the many things i'd like to upgrade, so maybe I'll start with upgrading to a different intake among other things. Just wondering, between a cold air intake or short ram intake, which would create a deeper sound?

Short ram intake would be louder, and makes the car run richer. Cold air intake will be noisy as well and still runs richer, but a deeper tone. The exhausts all sound like a mob of bees unless you go high end and get the full cat-back systems with resonators which moderate the tone and seem to be more pleasant to hear. Obviously, any changes made from stock dimensions will have an effect, but in my experience, most engine noise is from the intake rather than the fart can out back.

4 cylinder cars will sound like mosquitos whatever you do.
DC sports has a catback with a huge resonator to drown out noise and keep the sound decidable down. I ran it with a skunk 2 alpha header and mid to high rpms I was doing river drive bys.
I would just install a header and intake if I where ever to do it again.
