did you replace the transmission fluid recently or ever? I think a used one would be about the cost of the car, so it's up to you

Your internal transmission filter is stopping up. So if you turn your car off and let it sit for 5-10 min it will probably run fine for a couple min unit the filter sucks all the material up in the filter again.

I had an issue when my car got warmed up it would slip into "false neutral" which instead of going into drive it would be in neutral but shifter would be in drive. If that is your issue, I recommend replacing the torque converter. When I first had this issue the first thing I did was change transmission fluid and that did not solve the problem. Then I went through and changed out all the solenoids on the transmission thinking that a sensor was bad. That did not solve my problem either. So then I went and got a good deal and got a torque converter and a transmission out of a 02 civic and replaced my transmission and the torque converter at the same time and that fixed my issue. I looked around all over the internet and everyone was saying they needed a transmission rebuild or torque converter and my suggestion would be to buy the tranny and torque converter used. I personally just went to a local ewe pull it and pulled the parts my self and did all the work for it in my garage and only spend maybe $100 on the whole thing. If you have the tools that's what I would recommend cause a shop will charge you a fortune to do a transmission replacement.

I specialize in Honda and Acura transmissions. Buying a used one is not the way to go expecially if you plan on keeping the car. The factory transmission does not have the updated pressure regulator valve. I sale the 01-05 civics rebuilt transmission and torque converter for $685 with a one year warranty or $985 with a three year warranty.

I've read that the 04-05 transmissions had a larger (more effective) internal ATF filter than the 01-03s?

They do not. When you rebuild the transmission there is a updated filter that is larger. All 01-05 civics there is no difference from my experience. In my Shop we build around 200-300 a year. All have the same problem. Torque converter lining comes apart and goes in the transmission and cloggs the filter, then when the filter is clogged it starts burning up clutch packs clogging up the filter even more until complete failure. Putting a updated pressure regulator valve corrects this issue. It allows more fluid to the torque converter which will keep it cooler.
